IMU PGDME FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Marine Engineering and PGDME at IMU Mumbai, and which is better for a Mechanical Engineering graduate?
Ans. B.Tech Marine Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate program for 10+2 students, while PGDME is a 1-year postgraduate diploma for engineering graduates. For a Mechanical Engineering graduate who wants to enter the maritime industry, PGDME is the faster and more practical route. Both programs are DGS-approved and allow graduates to appear for the MEO Certificate of Competency examinations. The PGDME is specifically designed to bridge the gap between land-based mechanical engineering and marine engineering, covering all four marine engineering functions required by STCW standards.
Ques. After completing PGDME from IMU Mumbai, can I work as a Marine Engineer on ships?
Ans. Yes. The PGDME from IMU Mumbai is a DGS-approved program, which means graduates are eligible to appear for the MEO (Marine Engineer Officer) Class IV Certificate of Competency examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. After passing the Class IV exam and completing the required sea service, graduates can progressively work their way up to Chief Engineer. The program covers all four marine engineering functions as required by STCW, preparing students for shipboard roles.
Ques. Is IMU CET required for PGDME admission at IMU Mumbai?
Ans. No, IMU CET is NOT required for PGDME admission. Admission to PGDME is based on merit of UG marks and is conducted through a separate notification by IMU Mumbai Port Campus. Candidates do not need to register for IMU CET 2026 for PGDME. They should directly apply in response to the specific PGDME admission notification published on the IMU website (www.imu.edu.in/imunew/admissions-2026-27) and apply through the Google Form link provided.
Ques. Can a candidate with a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering apply for PGDME at IMU Mumbai?
Ans. No, B.Tech in Electrical Engineering alone does not qualify for PGDME admission at IMU Mumbai. The eligible degrees are: B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering streams where "Mechanical" is the core), B.E./B.Tech. in Marine Engineering (non-DGS approved), or B.E./B.Tech. in Naval Architecture streams (where "Naval Architecture" is the core). Candidates with Electrical and Electronics Engineering or pure Electrical Engineering degrees are not eligible for PGDME.
Ques. What is the seat intake for PGDME at IMU Mumbai, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. The PGDME program at IMU Mumbai Port Campus has an intake of 40 seats. Since admission is based on merit of UG marks (percentage in the final year of engineering), candidates with higher marks in their B.E./B.Tech. have a better chance of securing admission. The program is competitive given the limited seats and the prestige of IMU Mumbai Port Campus. Candidates are advised to apply early once the notification is released and ensure their documents are in order for Certificate Verification.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after PGDME from IMU Mumbai, and what is the expected salary?
Ans. After completing PGDME from IMU Mumbai and obtaining the MEO Class IV Certificate of Competency, graduates can work as Marine Engineer Officers on ships. Starting salaries for Trainee Marine Engineers (Cadets) range from INR 50,000 to 1,00,000 per month. With experience and higher CoC grades, salaries increase significantly: 4th Engineers earn INR 1.2 to 2 lakh per month, 3rd Engineers earn INR 2 to 3.5 lakh per month, and Chief Engineers can earn INR 8 to 12 lakh per month. Onshore career options include Marine Surveyor, Shipyard Manager, Port Engineer, Marine Consultant, and Offshore Engineer roles.
