RU Ph.D. Zoology FAQs
Ques. What are the main research areas in the Zoology Ph.D. program?
Ans. The Zoology department offers research opportunities in multiple thrust areas including characterization and documentation of local faunal diversity, limnology and hydrobiology, aquatic toxicology, aquaculture, conservation biology, insect pest management, immunology, endocrinology, and reproductive biology. Faculty members are actively engaged in research on zooplankton diversity, avian fauna, ecosystem services, and bioactive compounds from regional plants. The department has published 37 journal papers from 2015-2020 demonstrating strong research productivity.
Ques. What is the difference between the written entrance test and viva-voce interview?
Ans. The written entrance test assesses fundamental knowledge in research methodology (50%) and subject-specific topics in zoology (50%) for candidates who have not qualified national exams like UGC-NET or GATE. The viva-voce interview is conducted for all qualified candidates to evaluate their research aptitude, communication skills, and the feasibility of their proposed research work. Candidates must score minimum 50% in the written test to proceed to the interview stage.
Ques. Are candidates with UGC-NET or CSIR-NET qualification exempted from the written entrance test?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF), CSIR-NET (including JRF), SLET, SET, GATE, or hold fellowship positions are completely exempted from the written entrance test. However, they are still required to appear for the viva-voce interview conducted by the university to assess their research proposal and suitability for the program.
Ques. What specializations are available in the M.Sc. program that can help prepare for Ph.D.?
Ans. The M.Sc. Zoology program offers specializations in Immunology, Ecology, Entomology, Endocrinology, and Fisheries and Aquaculture. These specializations provide strong foundational knowledge directly applicable to Ph.D. research in the department. Students completing these specializations are well-prepared for advanced research in the thrust areas of the Ph.D. program including conservation biology and sustainable agriculture.
Ques. What is the duration of the Ph.D. program and when can I submit my thesis?
Ans. The Ph.D. program has a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years. After completing the mandatory coursework with required scores, students proceed to research work under an allocated supervisor. Thesis submission can typically occur after 2-3 years of research, subject to departmental Ph.D. Committee approval and completion of all required milestones including pre-submission seminar.
Ques. What facilities and infrastructure are available for Ph.D. research in Zoology?
Ans. The department provides well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments including compound microscopes, dissecting microscopes, ovens, incubators, refrigerators, binoculars, water baths, BOD incubators, laminar air flow, and centrifuges. The departmental library contains 70 textbooks and 150 e-books with computers for student use. The zoological museum houses enriched collections of rare specimens. Additionally, the department has access to university library resources and computing facilities for research work. Faculty rooms serve as research spaces for conducting independent research projects.
