SKDU Ph.D. (Commerce) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Commerce at SKDU a full-time programme? Can I pursue it while working?
Ans. Yes, it is strictly a full-time, on-campus programme. SKDU does not offer Ph.D. programmes through distance education mode. Candidates already enrolled in any other full-time programme are not eligible. Working professionals who wish to pursue this programme would need to take a leave of absence or obtain an NOC from their employer, and must fulfil all attendance and coursework requirements as per university norms.
Ques. I have qualified UGC-NET in Commerce. Do I still need to appear for the SKDU entrance test?
Ans. No. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DST-INSPIRE, GATE, or equivalent national-level examinations are exempt from the university entrance test. They can directly appear for the research interview/presentation before the Departmental Research Committee. However, they must still register on the SKDU online admission portal.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing a Ph.D. in Commerce?
Ans. A Ph.D. in Commerce opens a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates can pursue academic careers as Assistant Professors or Associate Professors in colleges and universities (UGC-NET/JRF qualification is mandatory for teaching positions). Other avenues include research positions in financial institutions, RBI, SEBI, ICAI, and government economic bodies; roles in corporate finance, taxation consulting, and audit firms; positions in management consulting and business analytics; and careers in policy research, think tanks, and international financial organisations. Ph.D. Commerce holders are also increasingly sought after in fintech, investment banking, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) research.
Ques. What are the popular research areas in Commerce that students pursue at universities like SKDU?
Ans. Popular research areas in Commerce include financial management and capital markets, taxation and GST compliance, corporate governance and ethics, banking and financial services, accounting standards and IFRS, rural and agricultural finance (highly relevant in Rajasthan's context), microfinance and financial inclusion, e-commerce and digital payments, and sustainability reporting. Given SKDU's location in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, research on agricultural finance, rural banking, and cooperative credit societies is particularly relevant.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for Ph.D. scholars at SKDU? What are the charges?
Ans. Yes, SKDU provides hostel facilities on campus. Hostel fees range from Rs. 72,000 to Rs. 1,05,000 per year depending on the type of accommodation. The campus is located at Chak 7STG, Khushal Nagar, near Suratgarh-Hanumangarh Road, Rajasthan, and is described as a peaceful environment conducive to research. Hostel accommodation is optional and not mandatory for the Ph.D. programme.
Ques. What is the difference between a Ph.D. in Commerce and a Ph.D. in Management at SKDU? Which one should I choose?
Ans. A Ph.D. in Commerce focuses on core commerce disciplines such as accounting, taxation, auditing, financial markets, and business law, and is best suited for candidates with an M.Com background who wish to pursue academic or research careers in commerce. A Ph.D. in Management (typically pursued after an MBA) focuses on organisational behaviour, strategic management, marketing, HR, and operations. If your background is M.Com and your research interest lies in finance, accounting, or taxation, Ph.D. Commerce is the right choice. If your background is MBA and your interest is in management strategy or business administration, Ph.D. Management would be more appropriate. Candidates are advised to discuss their research interests with the department before applying.
