CSMU Ph.D. (Science) FAQs
Ques. What science specialisations are available for Ph.D. at CSMU?
Ans. CSMU offers Ph.D. in Science across a wide range of specialisations including Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Mathematics, Botany, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, and Environmental Science. The availability of a research supervisor in a specific area is a key factor, and applicants are advised to contact the relevant department or the R&D Cell at CSMU to confirm supervisor availability and ongoing research projects before applying.
Ques. Is CSIR-NET qualification sufficient for exemption from the PET at CSMU?
Ans. Yes. Candidates with a valid CSIR-NET score (including JRF) are exempted from CSMU's Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET). CSIR-NET is particularly relevant for science disciplines such as Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences. However, even CSIR-NET qualified candidates must appear for the research presentation interview before the university's constituted panel, which assesses the candidate's research interest and proposed area of study.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. (Science) at CSMU after completing a B.Sc. (Research) or 4-year B.Sc. degree?
Ans. Yes. As per UGC Regulations 2022, candidates who have completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (such as B.Sc. Research or B.Sc. Hons.) with a minimum of 75% marks (70% for reserved categories) are eligible to apply directly for Ph.D. admission at CSMU without a master's degree. This is a relatively new provision under the NEP 2020 framework and opens up the Ph.D. pathway for high-performing undergraduate students.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. (Science) programme at CSMU, and can it be extended?
Ans. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. (Science) programme at CSMU is 3 years. There is no fixed maximum duration specified on the official website, but the programme continues until the thesis is submitted and evaluated. If the programme extends beyond the minimum 3 years, the annual programme fee of Rs. 1,40,000 continues to apply each year, along with the readmission fee of Rs. 1,500 per year from the 2nd year onwards.
Ques. What is the total cost of completing a Ph.D. (Science) at CSMU?
Ans. The minimum total cost for a 3-year Ph.D. (Science) at CSMU includes the annual programme fee of Rs. 1,40,000 per year (totalling Rs. 4,20,000 for 3 years), plus a one-time thesis submission fee of Rs. 30,000, bringing the minimum total to Rs. 4,50,000. Additional costs include the application fee of Rs. 1,500 (non-refundable), readmission fee of Rs. 1,500 per year from the 2nd year onwards, and examination fee of Rs. 1,000 per examination.
Ques. Does CSMU provide laboratory and research infrastructure for science Ph.D. scholars?
Ans. CSMU has dedicated science laboratories and research facilities for its Ph.D. scholars. The Faculty of Science has faculty with expertise in biotechnology, microbiology, environmental science, chemistry, and physics. The university's R&D Cell coordinates research activities and supports scholars in publishing research papers and attending conferences. Ph.D. scholars are also required to complete a mandatory coursework phase before proceeding to full-time research work.
