The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Public Administration at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University (CSMU), Panvel, Navi Mumbai is a full-time, on-campus undergraduate programme offered under the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Communication. The course is 3 years in duration (with an option to continue for a 4th year under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme as per NEP 2020), covering principles of public administration, Indian administrative system, local self-government, public policy, administrative law, financial administration, and e-governance. The annual fee is Rs. 50,000, making the total course fee Rs. 1,50,000 for the 3-year programme (Rs. 2,00,000 for the 4-year FYUP). Admission is based on merit in the qualifying examination or CUET-UG scores, and the programme is popular among students aspiring for civil services (UPSC/MPSC), government jobs, and careers in public sector management and policy.

Admission for the 2026-27 academic session is upcoming. CSMU accepts CUET-UG 2026 scores for admission to this programme. The CUET-UG 2026 exam is scheduled from May 11 to May 31, 2026, with results expected in early July 2026. After the CUET-UG result, CSMU will open its admission portal and publish merit lists. Students who have not appeared in CUET-UG may also apply directly through the CSMU admission portal (admissions.csmu.ac.in) and will be considered on the basis of their 10+2 marks.

Key Points

  • Public Administration is a highly relevant subject for UPSC/MPSC civil services aspirants, as it is a popular optional subject for UPSC Mains and directly covers the administrative machinery of India.

CSMU BA FAQs

Ques. Is BA (Public Administration) at CSMU a full-time, on-campus course or is it available in distance/online mode?

Ans. BA (Public Administration) at CSMU is strictly a full-time, on-campus programme offered at the Panvel, Navi Mumbai campus. Students are required to attend regular classes as part of the curriculum. CSMU does not offer this programme in distance or online mode. The university follows a structured timetable and students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible for examinations and scholarships.

Ques. Is BA (Public Administration) from CSMU useful for UPSC/MPSC civil services preparation?

Ans. Yes, Public Administration is one of the most popular optional subjects for UPSC Mains and is directly relevant to the MPSC State Services examination as well. The subject covers the Indian administrative system, public policy, financial administration, and e-governance, all of which are core areas of the civil services syllabus. Studying Public Administration at the undergraduate level gives students a strong conceptual foundation and a significant advantage in competitive exam preparation. CSMU's Navi Mumbai location also provides access to coaching institutes in the Mumbai metropolitan region.

Ques. What is the difference between BA (Public Administration) and BA (Political Science) at CSMU, and which is better for civil services?

Ans. Both Public Administration and Political Science are popular choices for civil services aspirants. Public Administration focuses on the practical aspects of governance, administrative machinery, and public policy, while Political Science covers political theory, comparative politics, and international relations. For UPSC Mains, Public Administration is considered a more scoring optional subject due to its practical and structured nature. Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is also popular but requires a broader understanding of theory. Students should choose based on their interest and aptitude.

Ques. What higher study options are available after BA (Public Administration) from CSMU?

Ans. After completing BA (Public Administration) from CSMU, students can pursue M.A. Public Administration at CSMU or other universities, appear for UPSC/MPSC civil services exams, pursue MBA in Public Policy or Social Work (MSW), or work in government departments, NGOs, and international organisations. CSMU's Department of Humanities also offers M.A. Public Administration as a postgraduate programme (2 years), providing a direct pathway for students who wish to continue their studies within the same university.

Ques. Can students from Science or Commerce background apply for BA (Public Administration) at CSMU?

Ans. Yes, students from all streams including Science, Commerce, and Arts are eligible to apply for BA (Public Administration) at CSMU. The only requirement is passing 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. There is no mandatory subject requirement at the 10+2 level. This makes it accessible to students from any background who are interested in governance, administration, and public policy.

Ques. What is the hostel fee at CSMU for 2026-27, and is it mandatory for BA Public Administration students?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at CSMU is completely optional and not mandatory for BA (Public Administration) students.
