SGU Ph.D. Physics FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between SGUPET Qualified and SGUPET Exempted candidates?
Ans. SGUPET Qualified candidates must appear for the SGUPET entrance examination and score more than 50% in both sections (Research Methodology and Physics-specific content). SGUPET Exempted candidates are those who have already qualified national-level exams like UGC-NET with JRF, GATE, or have M.Phil. degrees. They are directly eligible for the personal interview without appearing for SGUPET. Both categories are evaluated on the same merit list with 70% weightage to entrance exam performance and 30% to interview.
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. Physics while working full-time in an organization?
Ans. Yes, you can apply under the External (EX) category if you are employed and your organization provides a sponsorship certificate. However, you must complete the coursework and qualifier examination within 1-2 semesters after joining, which requires significant time commitment. Alternatively, you can apply under Study Leave (SF) category if your employer grants study leave. Note that employees on organizational rolls are not eligible for Teaching or Research Assistantship financial support.
Ques. What are the research areas available in Ph.D. Physics at SGU?
Ans. The Department of Physics at SGU offers research in several specialized areas including nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage devices, hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings for anticorrosion applications, and other advanced physics topics. The university provides access to well-equipped research laboratories, central facilities, and opportunities for collaborative research with international universities through joint supervision with foreign professors.
Ques. What is the minimum duration to complete Ph.D. Physics and what happens if I exceed it?
Ans. The minimum duration for Ph.D. Physics is 3 years, and the maximum duration is 6 years. You must submit your thesis after a minimum of 2 years from the date of registration. The period of validity of Ph.D. registration is 5 years from the date of confirmation of registration (after successful completion of coursework). Extension beyond 6 years requires special approval from the university authorities.
Ques. What coursework is mandatory for Ph.D. Physics students?
Ans. All Ph.D. students must complete a minimum of 16 credits of coursework divided into two parts. Part A includes mandatory courses: Research Methodology (3 credits), Research Publication Ethics (2 credits), and Computer Applications/IT (3 credits). Part B includes subject-specific courses: Foundation and Philosophy of Research (4 credits) and Research Problem Related Course (4 credits). You must score a minimum of 55% marks in coursework to be eligible for thesis submission. If you completed these courses during M.Phil. or postgraduation, you may be exempted from Part A.
Ques. What support does SGU provide for international collaboration and publication?
Ans. SGU offers comprehensive support for international research collaboration including joint supervision opportunities with professors from reputed foreign universities, access to international research funding and collaborative grants, travel fellowships for conference presentations abroad, and support for publishing research in high-impact Scopus and SCI indexed international journals. The university also provides postdoctoral pathways with priority consideration for positions in global partner universities. Additionally, there is a dedicated Cell for International Linkages that facilitates these opportunities and provides mentorship from distinguished international researchers and alumni working in top universities and industries worldwide.
