  • 80% of seats fill through MHT-CET 2026 (PCM) score — for Maharashtra domicile candidates with HSC from Maharashtra
  • 20% of seats fill through JEE Main score — All India quota, open to candidates from all states
  • Category reservation follows Maharashtra norms: OBC (19%), SC (13%), SBC (2%), VJ/NT (7%), EWS (10%)
  • CIWGC (Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries) quota: 15% of sanctioned intake per branch
  • Minimum 45% in 10+2 PCM (40% for reserved categories)

MHT-CET cutoff for COEP B.Tech CSE (General Category) has historically fallen above 99 percentile. JEE Main cutoff at COEP for the All India quota (Computer Engineering) typically falls in the 98 to 99 percentile range, reflecting COEP’s position as one of the most competitive government engineering colleges in Maharashtra.

Which college is academically best among NITK Surathkal, VNIT Nagpur and COEP?

Sayantani Barman
Aditi DeshpandeLives in Pune,Maharashtra

Here are some things you should consider while making a choice-

  • Branch- Choose the branch of your interest, instead of giving preference to brand name.
  • Crowd- Try reaching out to the students from these colleges, and find out the kind of projects they are working on.
  • Alumni Base- Research on the alumni network of these colleges, and where all the alumni have worked and studied.
  • Visiting Companies- Research on the top 5 companies that recruit from the college (from the branch of your interest). Find out the median package offered to the students of your branch.
  • Infrastructure and faculty- Research on faculty qualification, and the projects they are working on. This will be useful in getting recommended when applying abroad. Research on the lab facilities.
  • Campus life and exposure- Research on the campus life of each college.

COEP does not stand at par with the other two colleges. You’ll have to choose between NITK and VNIT Nagpur. You must choose between the two based on the branch of your interest.

What should I take, IT from COEP or Metallurgy from NIT Surathkal?

Ditsha BanerjeeStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

The answer to this question is very subjective. On one hand, you are getting a top-notch branch at a not-so-celebrated college, on the other, a top NIT is offering a mediocre branch. Your interest matters as much in this situation.

As a student of Metallurgy at NIT Surathkal, I can shed some light on this option. The branch has a small strength of around 38-40 students in each batch. Your peers will be very supportive people. The faculty for metallurgy is experienced, learned, and supportive. Metallurgy, in fact, is one of the most student-friendly branches of NIT Surathkal. The professors are always there to solve any doubts and queries of their students.

As for the curriculum, the majority of it revolves around steel and its properties, ceramics, polymers, etc. With an interest in your branch, the curriculum is quite easy to get through. The placements are good, and maximum students are offered jobs on campus. The average package isn’t too high for this branch. This is because core profiles don’t offer more than 3-9 LPA. You can expect a bit higher packages in non-core job profiles. NITK is a highly esteemed institution, for this reason, a wide range of companies visit the campus during the placement season. The crowd at NITK is very friendly, and the Metallurgy branch has some amazing seniors.

I have provided you with all the relevant information about the Metallurgy branch at NIT Surathkal. Try to reach out to some seniors from COEP IT branch. Make your decision based on what matters the most to you- college name, branch, or your own interest.

Which is better, NIT Kurukshetra or COEP Pune?

Aditi DeshpandeLives in Pune,Maharashtra

Both NIT Kurukshetra and COEP are good colleges. As a student of COEP Pune, I can tell you about my college in detail-

Weaknesses-

  1. COEP won’t provide you with cross-cultural exposure like NIT Kurukshetra.
  2. The NIT tag does offer some advantage when it comes to higher studies in foreign universities.
  3. The academics are quite rigorous. You can’t prepare for your exams the night before and hope to pass.

Strengths-

  1. The strength of COEP resides in its extracurricular activities, both on the national and international level-
  • COEP students perform really well in BAJA SAE and Supra.
  • The theater students perform really well. Some of them have caught the eyes of famous people like Mahesh Manjerekar in the past.
  • Bhau Institute is a highly active startup incubator.
  • COEP is among the very few colleges in India with a Boat Club. It hosts Regata- the biggest boating festival in India. Students from COEP visit Portugal, Africa, etc. to participate in boating competitions.
  1. COEP has a strong alumni network. Its alumni list includes civil servants, graduates from renowned universities, and people working in

brands like Amazon USA, Google, Facebook, Tesla Motors, etc.

  1. The core placements are decent and IT placements are good at COEP.

Thus, COEP is a good college. According to me, after your graduation from either of these, you should go for a PG.

Which one should I choose: NSIT, DTU, RVCE, COEP, IIIT-D or BMS?

Tithi AggrawalLives in New Delhi

Among the aforementioned institutes, NSUT, DTU, and IIIT Delhi are tier-1 Engineering colleges while COEP, RVCE, and BMS are Tier-2 colleges. Here is a general comparison between the two groups of people institutes

First Group

  • The first group comprises the best technical colleges in India. These colleges are excellent choices for COE, IT, and ECE.
  • These colleges have a good reputation and have strong alumni backing them.
  • If you are getting COE, IT, or ECE in these colleges don’t even think of joining the colleges in the second group.

Second group

  • The colleges in this group can be given preference if you fail to make it to the colleges in the first group.
  • If you are getting branches like CS, IT, and ECE, choose the colleges in the following order COEP >> RVCE > BMS
  • COEP is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India and was ranked 101 out of 200 in India in 2022 by NIRF. It has an excellent placement record and might even become a tier-1 college in the future.
  • RVCE and BMS are decent colleges and can be placed above colleges such as Manipal and SRM.
  • Another great option is IIIT Bangalore, the third-best IIIT, which is well-known for its CSE course

Hope the comparison was clear and will help you in making your decision.

College of Engineering Pune is a competitive institute, and admission depends on MHT CET or JEE Main percentile through CAP counselling. If your percentile is low, direct admission is not available. You can still try spot rounds, institute-level vacancies, or improve your score next year for better admission chances.

May 9, 2026 13:22

With an 88.38 percentile in MHT CET, admission to COEP Technological University under the open category is difficult for top branches like computer engineering, IT, and electronics, as their cutoffs are much higher. However, chances may exist in lower-demand branches depending on the final cutoff trends, seat availability, category-wise rounds, and spot rounds. Participating in CAP rounds and institute-level counseling is strongly recommended for better opportunities.
