The institute offers four specialisations in Forestry. Among them, Wood Science and Technology give 100% placement. Students can join many government organisations and companies as forest inspectors, PDS etc.

The study here can be a boon or a bane, depending on your perception

Placement Experience:

The placements are not so great. Also there are no great prospects in forestry in private sector in India. There are few in agroforestry and relevant fields. Few of my mates are placed in JK papers, which is a paper manufacturing firm. Of the class of 40 students, 2 got placed. So 5% placements (here, I'm taking about forestry. In the wood science and technology course, placements are 100%). University, quite unexpectedly, do not allow its students to do an internship, and often discourages the students to join somewhere as intern. Though few of the students do internship, without the knowledge if university. And if asked the permission to do internship, the dean, and university administration refuses, usually the reason being, it may lead to missing few classes which is not acceptable to them.

Excellent campus

Placement Experience:

This is the worst part here. They simply don't care about where you go, what type of placement you getting. What's all they want is to show 100% placements in their advertisement for new msc batch. This is all crap. Firstly getting placement from FRI is very tough, even if you get the placement, those placements are not even worth sharing with anyone. Kind of "Chanda collection" jobs they get.

A forester's dream

Placement Experience:

Wood science and technology is a course with 100% placement. Companies, mainly wood based companies comes for recruitment. Cellulose and paper technology is another course with placement over 80%. These courses places their students in industrial sectors. Other courses have considerable amount of placement both in NGOs and in plantation firm. Others go for higher education and rest towards civil services.

FRI DEHRADUN-THE DOOR TO HEAVEN

Placement Experience:

Placement for the course of Wood Science is 100%. For forestry and environment management it stands around 60%. Several disciplines within the institute provide short term trainings and internships. I am presently working as a project assistance. Stipends are given as per ICFRE guidelines.

Placements and Job Opportunities are good because the College is prestigious College in its field.WST (Wood Science and Technology) is having 100% placement records.In Forestry branch I can say the placement is not so good because we do not have many companies of this sector and generally the Students of Forestry do not look for placements because Either they prepare for IFS or go for Further Studies Like doing Ph.D and NET.

Department-wise Placement Info

The Wood Science and tech department promises 100% placement which has been achieved by the institute to some extent. Various companies have hired students offering Plywood to Hardware Designing Jobs. Students have received offers from Cafe Coffee Day.
Cellulose and Paper Technology also offers great placement prospects. Companies like JK Paper have hired students. Both FRI and CPPRI Saharanpur look into the placement process.
If you want to join MSc in Forestry, then you will have job prospects in Plantations. Companies like TATA Tea have visited the campus. You can look forward to better prospects.

The opportunity of placement here is bleak, therefore it is better to look out for other opportunities as well. If you have completed your MSc in forestry from FRI, you have four options to pursue –

Join the Forest department as a forest ranger. It is an adventurous job and it is flourishing, as a profession, in recent years.
Prepare for government exams. It is always a safe option to fall back on. If one manages to crack it, they get a secured job, with a good salary package, and a reputation as well.
If one wants to continue in the academic line of forestry, then Ph.D. is always a great option. One can work on their research paper, dedicate long hours of research to their selected topic and produce a research paper that can be published later on.

If the above-mentioned options are not suitable, then you can apply for the respective companies to work in. The chances of companies paying a visit to the forestry department are rare but the students can establish a link – a direct contact with the companies based on f their grades and resume.

There are multiple paths outside the world of FRI that can be explored, all one needs is the knowledge of the chosen path and the right direction. I hope this was helpful.
