MGKVP Ph.D. (Fine Arts) FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the Research Entrance Test (RET) and the interview stage?
Ans. The RET is a written examination consisting of two papers designed to assess research aptitude and subject knowledge. It tests candidates' understanding of research methodology and fine arts concepts. The interview/viva-voce stage, conducted after RET qualification, is a face-to-face interaction where candidates present their research proposal and discuss their academic background with faculty members. The interview evaluates communication skills, research clarity, and suitability for doctoral research. Both stages are mandatory for admission.
Ques. Can I apply for Ph.D. (Fine Arts) if my Master's degree is in a related field like Art History or Museum Studies?
Ans. Yes, you can apply if your Master's degree is in a related field such as Art History, Museum Studies, Art Criticism, or Cultural Studies, provided you meet the minimum 55% marks requirement. However, you should have a strong foundation in fine arts concepts and practices. It is recommended to contact the Department of Fine Arts at MGKVP to confirm whether your specific qualification meets their eligibility criteria before applying.
Ques. Is the 6-month course work mandatory for all admitted Ph.D. scholars?
Ans. Yes, the 6-month course work is mandatory for all admitted Ph.D. scholars, including those exempted from the RET (such as JRF/NET qualified candidates). This course work covers Research Methodology, Quantitative Methods, Computer Applications, and subject-specific literature review. Candidates must maintain 75% attendance in all classes and secure a minimum of 55% marks in each paper to pass the course work examination. Failure to complete course work will delay your doctoral research progression.
Ques. What are the exemptions available from the Research Entrance Test (RET)?
Ans. Candidates who are exempted from RET include: (a) Regular teachers of MGKVP or its affiliated colleges who have completed their probation period, (b) Foreign candidates and NRIs, (c) Candidates selected for UGC/CSIR fellowships (JRF/NET Category-2 & Category-3) or equivalent, (d) Candidates who scored at least 75% in GATE examination, and (e) Military officers with 15+ years of service applying for specific programs. However, exempted candidates must still appear for the interview/viva-voce stage and complete the mandatory course work.
Ques. How many seats are available for Ph.D. (Fine Arts) and what is the competition level?
Ans. Only 1 seat is available for Ph.D. (Fine Arts) at MGKVP, making it an extremely selective program. This limited seat availability means high competition among applicants. The program attracts serious researchers and artists from across India. Candidates should prepare thoroughly for the RET and have a well-developed research proposal to succeed in the interview stage.
