GBU Ph.D. (IRPS) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. program in Political Science and International Relations available in distance mode?
Ans. No, the Ph.D. program is offered only in full-time on-campus mode. Students are required to be physically present on campus for coursework, research activities, and other academic engagements. The program is designed as a residential program with mandatory hostel accommodation, ensuring students have access to university facilities, library resources, and regular interaction with faculty members for research guidance.
Ques. What is the difference between Full-Time and Working Professional modes for Ph.D. admission?
Ans. The Full-Time (FT) mode is designed for candidates who can dedicate themselves entirely to research and coursework. The Working Professional (WP) mode is for candidates with at least 2 years of teaching/research experience from national institutes or 2 years of industry/R&D experience. WP candidates must provide a No Objection Certificate and letter of consent from their organization. The academic fee for WP mode is ₹50,000 INR per semester compared to ₹25,000 INR for FT mode. Both modes require completion of first-year coursework in classroom mode.
Ques. Are JRF/NET qualified candidates required to appear for GBU-ET?
Ans. Candidates who have qualified for JRF through UGC/CSIR/DBT/ICAR-ASRB or NET with Qualified for Ph.D. category are exempted from appearing in GBU-ET. However, they must still fulfill other minimum eligibility criteria as per UGC and GBU rules. These candidates will be selected based on 70% weightage of their UGC/NET score and 30% weightage to interview performance. Additionally, JRF qualified candidates receive 5 extra marks and NET qualified candidates receive 3 extra marks in the selection process.
Ques. What is the research proposal requirement for Ph.D. admission?
Ans. All Ph.D. applicants must submit a research proposal of approximately 1,500 words at the time of the interview. The proposal's title page must specify the discipline of research and the mode of admission (Full-Time or Working Professional). Candidates may also submit a list of publications or other research credentials if available. The research proposal is a critical component of the interview evaluation and helps the selection committee assess the candidate's research aptitude and clarity of research direction.
Ques. What are the hostel accommodation options and associated costs?
Ans. Gautam Buddha University provides mandatory hostel accommodation for Ph.D. students. Single-seated rooms cost ₹50,000 INR per annum, while double-seated rooms cost ₹30,000 INR per annum. Mess charges are ₹40,000 INR per annum. Hostel exemption is ordinarily not allowed and can only be granted in exceptional circumstances (married students or those with chronic ailments requiring ongoing hospitalization) on a case-by-case basis. Exemption applications must be submitted within 15 days of admission closing through the office of student affairs. During internships outside campus, mess charges are exempted.
Ques. What is the selection process and weightage for final admission?
Ans. The selection process involves two stages. First, candidates must qualify the GBU-ET, which is qualifying in nature with a minimum passing mark of 50% for General/OBC candidates and 45% for SC/ST candidates. Qualified candidates are then called for an interview in a ratio of 1:7 per seat (category-wise). Final selection is based on 70% weightage to the entrance test score and 30% weightage to interview/viva voce performance. The interview panel evaluates candidates based on their academic background, area of interest, and research proposal presentation as per UGC Ph.D. Degrees Regulations, 2016.
