AMU Ph.D. (West Asian Studies) FAQs
Ques. What are the main research areas available in the Ph.D. programme in West Asian Studies at AMU?
Ans. The Department of West Asian Studies at AMU covers a wide range of research areas including Middle Eastern and North African politics, Gulf region geopolitics, Arab-Israeli conflict, India-West Asia relations, Islamic civilisation and thought, Arabic language and literature, West Asian economics, and the political economy of oil-producing states. The department has faculty with specialisations in these areas, and research topics are finalised in consultation with the assigned supervisor. Prospective candidates are advised to review the faculty profiles on the AMU website before applying to identify a potential supervisor whose research interests align with their own.
Ques. Is UGC-NET mandatory for admission to the Ph.D. programme at AMU?
Ans. UGC-NET is not mandatory for admission to the Ph.D. programme at AMU. Candidates without UGC-NET/JRF can appear in AMU's own written test and, if shortlisted, in the presentation-cum-interview. However, candidates who have qualified UGC-NET with JRF or similar national-level fellowships are exempted from the written test and need only appear in the presentation-cum-interview. Having a JRF also entitles the scholar to a monthly fellowship of Rs. 37,000 (JRF) or Rs. 42,000 (SRF), which significantly reduces the financial burden of doctoral research.
Ques. How many seats are available in the Ph.D. programme in West Asian Studies each year?
Ans. The number of seats in the Ph.D. programme is not fixed and depends on the number of faculty members available as supervisors and their current research supervision load. Typically, only a small number of seats (often 3-8) are available each year across all specialisations in the department. The university does not guarantee a fixed intake, and the actual number of admissions may be lower than the notified intake. Candidates are advised to apply early and contact the department directly to understand supervisor availability.
Ques. Can I pursue the Ph.D. in West Asian Studies at AMU on a part-time basis while working?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme listed in the AMU Guide to Admissions is a full-time programme. Candidates who are employed must produce a leave sanction or relieving order from their employer at the time of counselling, permitting them to pursue full-time studies at the university. AMU does not offer a part-time Ph.D. in West Asian Studies through the regular admission process. However, candidates may explore the possibility of part-time research under specific provisions if they are employed at AMU or in certain government positions, subject to departmental and university approval.
Ques. What is the minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme and what happens if I cannot complete it within that time?
Ans. As per UGC regulations, the minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme is 3 years from the date of registration, and the maximum duration is 6 years. Candidates who are unable to complete the programme within 6 years may apply for an extension of up to 2 years on valid grounds, subject to university approval. Female candidates and PwBD scholars are entitled to an additional relaxation of 2 years. The programme involves coursework in the first year, followed by research work, submission of a thesis, and a viva voce examination.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a Ph.D. in West Asian Studies from AMU?
Ans. A Ph.D. in West Asian Studies from AMU opens doors to academic and research careers in universities, think tanks, and policy research institutions. Graduates can pursue careers as university faculty (Assistant Professor), research fellows at institutions such as ICWA, IDSA, ORF, and similar foreign policy think tanks, or as analysts in government ministries dealing with external affairs and Gulf affairs. The AMU brand, combined with the department's strong reputation in Arab and Middle Eastern studies, is particularly valued in institutions with a focus on India-West Asia relations, Gulf diplomacy, and Islamic studies.
