AMU Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. Is GATE score mandatory for admission to Ph.D. Computer Engineering at AMU, or can I apply without it?
Ans. GATE score is not mandatory for applying to the Ph.D. programme at AMU. The university conducts its own Departmental Entrance Test (DET) for candidates who do not hold a valid GATE score or UGC-NET/JRF qualification. However, if you have a valid GATE score or have cleared UGC-NET/JRF, you are exempted from appearing in the DET. This exemption is a significant advantage as it saves preparation time and directly moves you to the interview stage. It is important to note that even GATE/NET-JRF qualified candidates must apply through the official AMU portal and appear for the Presentation-cum-Interview.
Ques. What is the research proposal, and how important is it during the AMU PhD interview?
Ans. The research proposal is a document outlining your intended area of research, the problem statement, objectives, and a brief methodology. At AMU, you are required to present your research proposal before the Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) during the Presentation-cum-Interview. This is a critical component of the selection process. A well-structured proposal that demonstrates clarity of thought, awareness of existing literature, and feasibility of the research topic significantly improves your chances of selection. It is advisable to identify a potential supervisor in the Department of Computer Engineering before the interview and align your proposal with their research interests.
Ques. Can I pursue the Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at AMU on a part-time basis while working?
Ans. Yes, AMU offers a Part-Time Ph.D. option for working professionals. The duration for Part-Time PhD is 4 to 7 years. However, the fee for Part-Time PhD is significantly higher at Rs. 50,000 per semester compared to Rs. 26,100 per semester for Full-Time. To be eligible for Part-Time PhD, you must be employed in a government/public sector undertaking or R&D organisation for at least two years and must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer. Note that Part-Time PhD scholars are generally not provided hostel accommodation.
Ques. What are the research areas available under Ph.D. Computer Engineering at AMU, and how do I find a supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Computer Engineering at AMU (under ZHCET) has faculty working in diverse research areas including Computer Networks, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Information Security, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, and Internet of Things (IoT). To find a supervisor, it is recommended to visit the official ZHCET/AMU website and review faculty profiles and their published research. You can also reach out to faculty members via email before applying to discuss your research interests. Having a supervisor in mind before the interview is strongly advisable, as the DRC will assess the alignment between your proposal and available supervisory expertise.
Ques. What is the stipend or fellowship available for Ph.D. scholars at AMU Computer Engineering, and how is it disbursed?
Ans. PhD scholars at AMU who have qualified GATE or UGC-NET/JRF are eligible to receive the corresponding fellowship from the funding agency (AICTE/UGC). The JRF stipend is Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years, which increases to Rs. 42,000 per month (SRF) for the remaining period. For minority community students, the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) provides Rs. 25,000/month (JRF) and Rs. 28,000/month (SRF). These fellowships are disbursed subject to the grant being provided to AMU by the respective funding agency. Scholars without any fellowship may be eligible for UGC Non-NET Fellowship of approximately Rs. 8,000 per month, subject to university policy and availability.
Ques. How competitive is the Ph.D. Computer Engineering admission at AMU, and what is the seat intake?
Ans. The Ph.D. Computer Engineering programme at AMU has a total seat intake of 16 seats per year. Given AMU's reputation as a premier central university with NIRF Engineering Rank #34 in 2025, the programme is quite competitive. Candidates with GATE/NET-JRF qualification have a distinct advantage as they are directly called for the interview. For candidates appearing in the DET, a minimum of 20% marks in the entrance test is required to be eligible for admission. The final selection is based on a combination of entrance test performance and the Presentation-cum-Interview. It is advisable to have a strong academic record (above 60% in M.Tech./M.E.) and a well-prepared research proposal to improve your chances.
