AMU Ph.D. (Botany) FAQs
Ques. Is the AMU PhD Botany entrance test compulsory for all candidates, or can NET/JRF holders get a direct interview call?
Ans. Candidates who have qualified CSIR-NET or UGC-NET with JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) are exempted from the written entrance test at AMU. They are directly called for the Presentation-cum-Interview round before the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). However, it is important to note that this exemption applies only to JRF holders, not to candidates who have merely qualified NET without JRF. Candidates with only NET (without JRF) must still appear in the AMU PhD entrance test. This is a significant advantage for JRF holders, as the written test is competitive given the limited number of seats (only 3 in Botany).
Ques. What is the research focus of the Department of Botany at AMU, and which areas are most active for PhD research?
Ans. The Department of Botany at AMU has active research groups working in areas such as plant physiology and biochemistry, mycology and plant pathology, ethnobotany and medicinal plants, environmental botany and pollution biology, plant ecology and biodiversity, and molecular biology of plants. The department has faculty members with funded projects from DST, DBT, CSIR, and UGC, which means research scholars often get the opportunity to work on externally funded projects. Students interested in ethnobotany, medicinal plant research, and environmental botany tend to find particularly strong mentorship at AMU given the university's geographic location and the department's historical strengths.
Ques. How does the supervisor allotment process work for PhD Botany at AMU, and can I choose my own supervisor?
Ans. At AMU, supervisor allotment for PhD is done by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) after the interview round. During the Presentation-cum-Interview, candidates present their research proposal, and the DRC evaluates the alignment of the candidate's research interest with the available supervisors' expertise and their current student load. While candidates can express a preference for a particular supervisor in their research proposal, the final allotment is at the discretion of the DRC. It is advisable to contact potential supervisors before applying and discuss your research interests, as a prior understanding can help during the interview process.
Ques. What is the fee waiver policy for PhD students who receive JRF or other national fellowships at AMU?
Ans. AMU has a clear policy that research scholars who are awarded JRF/SRF from national funding agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DST, or DBT are exempted from paying tuition fees during the period of their fellowship. This means that if you secure a CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF, you will not need to pay the per-semester tuition fee component. However, other charges such as examination fees, library charges, and medical charges may still be applicable. The security deposit (Rs. 5,000) is also still payable at the time of admission and is refunded at the end of the programme. Students should confirm the exact components covered under the fee waiver with the university's finance office at the time of admission.
Ques. What is the coursework requirement for PhD Botany at AMU, and how is it evaluated?
Ans. As per UGC regulations and AMU's PhD ordinances, all PhD students are required to complete mandatory coursework in the first year of their programme. The coursework at AMU typically includes research methodology, subject-specific advanced topics, and a review of literature. The coursework is evaluated through a written examination conducted by the university, and students must secure a minimum passing grade to proceed to the research phase. The coursework examination is an internal university examination and is separate from the PhD entrance test. Students who fail the coursework examination may be given one additional attempt. Successful completion of coursework is a prerequisite for submission of the PhD synopsis and thesis.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for PhD Botany students at AMU, and what are the living costs?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at AMU is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. PhD research scholars are eligible to apply for hostel accommodation through the university's hostel management system, but allotment depends on the availability of rooms in the respective halls of residence. AMU has separate halls for male and female students. The hostel charges are among the most affordable in India, with room charges of approximately Rs. 800 to Rs. 2,000 per year and mess charges of approximately Rs. 1,700 to Rs. 2,000 per month (covering three meals a day). Given the very low hostel fees, accommodation at AMU is highly sought after, and research scholars are advised to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after admission confirmation. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically find private accommodation in the areas surrounding the AMU campus.
