AMU PhD FAQs
Ques. Is the AMU PhD Applied Mathematics entrance test conducted online or offline, and what is the exam pattern?
Ans. The AMU PhD entrance test (Departmental Entrance Test / DET) is conducted in online mode. The test is divided into two equal sections: 50% of the questions are based on research aptitude (covering research methodology, logical reasoning, and general awareness about research), and the remaining 50% are subject-specific questions from Applied Mathematics. The total duration is typically 90 minutes to 2 hours. Candidates who have qualified CSIR-NET or UGC-NET with JRF are fully exempted from this written test and are directly called for the Presentation-cum-Interview round at the department.
Ques. Can a working professional pursue this PhD programme part-time, and what are the conditions?
Ans. Yes, AMU does offer a part-time PhD option for working professionals. However, the part-time fee per semester is significantly higher at Rs. 50,000 per semester compared to Rs. 9,950 per semester for full-time scholars. Part-time candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience and must submit an NOC from their employer. The minimum duration for part-time PhD is 4 years, extendable up to 7 years. Part-time scholars are still required to be present on campus for coursework, seminars, and DRC meetings as per the schedule set by the department.
Ques. What research areas are available for PhD in Applied Mathematics at AMU, and how does one choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Applied Mathematics at AMU has active research groups working in areas including fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), numerical analysis, mathematical modelling, operations research, fuzzy mathematics, and computational methods. After clearing the entrance test and interview, selected candidates are allotted a supervisor based on mutual interest, faculty availability, and the research proposal submitted during the interview. It is advisable to contact faculty members of the department beforehand to discuss potential research topics and check for supervisor availability before applying.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for PhD scholars at AMU, and what are the approximate living costs?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at AMU is not automatically guaranteed for PhD scholars and is subject to availability in the respective halls of residence. However, AMU has a large campus with multiple halls of residence, and PhD scholars generally do get accommodation. The hostel fee is very nominal at approximately Rs. 2,000 per year. Mess charges are approximately Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,700 per month, covering three meals a day. Overall, the cost of living on the AMU campus is considered very affordable compared to other central universities, making it a financially accessible option for research scholars.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a PhD in Applied Mathematics from AMU?
Ans. A PhD in Applied Mathematics from AMU opens doors to a wide range of academic and industry careers. Graduates can apply for Assistant Professor positions in universities and colleges (UGC-NET qualification is required for teaching positions). Research positions in government organisations such as DRDO, ISRO, CSIR labs, and the Defence Research sector are also accessible. In the private sector, roles in data science, quantitative analysis, financial modelling, and operations research are increasingly available for applied mathematics PhD holders. Many AMU PhD graduates also pursue post-doctoral fellowships in India and abroad, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, given AMU's strong international academic network.
Ques. What documents are required at the time of application, and is there any reservation policy for PhD admissions at AMU?
Ans. At the time of online application, candidates need to upload scanned copies of their 10th and 12th mark sheets, graduation and post-graduation mark sheets and degree certificates, NET/JRF scorecard (if applicable), a valid ID proof (Aadhaar card), passport-size photographs, a research proposal, and a Statement of Purpose (SOP). Category certificates (OBC/SC/ST/EWS) must also be submitted if claiming reservation benefits. AMU follows the Government of India reservation policy for central universities, with reservations for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC-NCL (27%), and EWS (10%) categories. The minimum eligibility marks are relaxed to 50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
