AMU M.Sc FAQs
Ques. Is the AMU M.Sc Physics entrance test very competitive, and what is the difficulty level?
Ans. The AMU M.Sc Physics entrance test is a departmental test comprising 80 questions (70 MCQs worth 140 marks and 10 short answer questions worth 60 marks), conducted over 2 hours. The syllabus is based on the B.Sc (Hons.) Physics curriculum offered at AMU. Students who have a strong grasp of undergraduate physics concepts and practice previous year papers (available at the Maulana Azad Library on campus) generally find it manageable. External candidates are advised to thoroughly cover topics like classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, and mathematical physics. The minimum qualifying mark is 20% in the entrance test.
Ques. What specialisations are available in the second year of M.Sc Physics at AMU, and how does the selection work?
Ans. In the second year of M.Sc Physics at AMU, students can choose from specialisations such as High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Spectroscopy, Astrophysics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, and Computational Physics. The selection of specialisation is typically based on the student's preference and seat availability within the department. Students are advised to interact with faculty members early in the first year to understand research group activities and align their specialisation choice accordingly.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.Sc Physics from AMU?
Ans. Graduates of M.Sc Physics from AMU pursue diverse career paths. Many go on to PhD programmes at premier institutions like TIFR, IMSc, IITs, and foreign universities. Others qualify for government research positions at DRDO, ISRO, and BARC through GATE and CSIR-UGC NET. Teaching positions at colleges and universities are also a common career path. In recent years, graduates have also moved into data science, instrumentation, and R&D roles in the private sector. The key to strong outcomes is proactive preparation for NET/GATE and seeking research internships during the programme.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc Physics students at AMU?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at AMU is not guaranteed for all admitted students. The university allocates hostel rooms based on availability and its own policy. Students admitted to full-time regular courses are generally eligible for hostel consideration, but the number of hostel seats is limited relative to the total student population. It is advisable to apply for hostel accommodation immediately upon admission confirmation. Students who do not get hostel accommodation typically arrange private accommodation near the campus in Aligarh.
Ques. Does AMU Physics Department have any international research collaborations that M.Sc students can benefit from?
Ans. Yes, the AMU Physics Department has notable international collaborations, most prominently with CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) and Ohio State University (USA). A team of faculty members from the Physics and Applied Physics departments regularly participates in research at CERN. While M.Sc students do not directly participate in CERN experiments, they benefit from the research culture, seminars, and guidance from faculty involved in these collaborations. Students who perform well and show research aptitude may get opportunities to work on related projects or pursue internships at national labs like BARC or TIFR, which can serve as a stepping stone to international research.
Ques. What is the fee refund policy if I cancel my admission after joining AMU M.Sc Physics?
Ans. AMU follows a structured refund policy for fee cancellations. If a student cancels admission before the commencement of the academic session, the fees paid (excluding the admission test fee and processing charges, which are non-refundable) are refunded after deduction of applicable charges as per university rules. The test fee and processing charges are strictly non-refundable under any circumstances. Students are advised to carefully read the refund rules in the Guide to Admissions before paying fees, as the refund amount depends on the timing of cancellation relative to the course start date.
