The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh is a 5-year full-time undergraduate programme offered under the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), one of India's oldest and most reputed engineering institutions. The programme spans 10 semesters and covers architectural design, building construction, structural systems, environmental studies, urban planning, and professional practice. The total tuition fee for the entire 5-year programme is approximately Rs. 1,27,500, making it one of the most affordable B.Arch programmes at a central university in India. Admission is based on the AMU Engineering Entrance Examination (AMUEEE) along with a mandatory valid NATA score, and the programme accommodates an intake of 40 seats. The course is popular among students seeking quality architectural education at a subsidised fee in a historic residential campus environment.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are currently ongoing. The AMUEEE 2026 for B.Tech/B.Arch was conducted on 19 April 2026. Counselling and admission completion are expected between June and August 2026, with the final closing date for all admissions being 31 August 2026. Candidates who appeared in AMUEEE 2026 and hold a valid NATA score should monitor the official AMU Controller of Examinations website (www.amucontrollerexams.com) for counselling schedule notifications.

Key Points

  • The B.Arch programme at AMU is housed within ZHCET, which is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India, established in 1935.
  • The first year of the B.Arch programme at AMU has significant overlap with the B.Tech Civil Engineering curriculum, giving students a strong foundation in structural and construction sciences.
  • Candidates who apply for B.Arch admission are also simultaneously considered for B.Tech admission based on their AMUEEE score, as per AMU's admission policy.
  • The programme is Council of Architecture (CoA) approved, and graduates are eligible for registration as licensed architects in India.
  • AMU's sprawling 467.6-acre residential campus provides architecture students with a rich built heritage environment for study and inspiration.
  • The university has a strong and globally spread alumni network, which is particularly beneficial for architecture graduates seeking opportunities in the Middle East, Gulf countries, and across India.

AMU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 4 Reviews

The college has a favorable faculty-to-student ratio of 1:10, although concerns exist about some guest faculty's lack of experience and outdated teaching methods. While some faculty members are approachable, they are not universally helpful. Nevertheless, there are experienced and hardworking teachers who contribute positively. The college's placement record is strong, with a high placement rate of about 95%. The highest salary package offered is around 15 lakh per annum, the lowest is 4 lakh per annum, and the average package is approximately 5 lakh per annum.

Major companies like Tata and Infosys recruit from the college. Financially, the college is affordable, with B.Arch students paying an annual fee of 18,000 INR, with a first-year fee of 21,000 INR and 7,000 INR for each subsequent year. The college supports students through various scholarships, including the National Scholarship Portal and the Sir Syed Global Scholarship Award (SSGSA), which provides aid for study abroad opportunities by covering application fees and standardized test costs.

Though there are no scholarships specifically for B.Arch students, numerous options are available for all students, including government and alumni-funded scholarships.

AMU B.Arch FAQs

Ques. Is NATA compulsory for B.Arch admission at AMU, or is AMUEEE score alone sufficient?

Ans. Both AMUEEE and a valid NATA score are mandatory for B.Arch admission at AMU. The Council of Architecture (CoA) mandates that all B.Arch admissions in India must consider NATA scores as part of the selection process. At AMU, candidates must appear in the AMUEEE (B.Tech/B.Arch Paper) and also hold a valid NATA score. Candidates who qualify AMUEEE but do not have a NATA score will not be eligible for B.Arch admission. It is advisable to appear in NATA 2026 Phase 1 (April-June 2026) well before the AMU counselling begins.

Ques. If I apply for B.Arch at AMU, will I also be considered for B.Tech Civil Engineering automatically?

Ans. Yes, as per AMU's admission policy, candidates who apply for B.Arch are simultaneously considered for B.Tech admission based on their AMUEEE score. This means if you are not selected for B.Arch (due to limited seats or lower rank), you may still be offered a B.Tech branch based on your merit and preference. This is a unique feature of AMU's admission process that gives B.Arch applicants a safety net for engineering admission.

Ques. The first year of B.Arch at AMU overlaps with B.Tech Civil Engineering - does this affect the quality of architecture education?

Ans. This is a genuine concern raised by students and alumni. The first year at AMU's B.Arch programme shares significant coursework with the B.Tech Civil Engineering programme, covering subjects like Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Drawing, and Building Materials. While this gives students a strong technical foundation, some students feel it delays the start of core architectural design studios. From the second year onwards, the curriculum becomes distinctly architecture-focused with design studios, history of architecture, environmental studies, and professional practice. Students who are passionate about design should supplement their first year with self-study in architectural drawing and design concepts.

Ques. What is the hostel situation for B.Arch students at AMU? Is accommodation guaranteed?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at AMU is not guaranteed and is subject to availability. AMU has a large number of Halls of Residence (hostels) on its residential campus, and full-time regular course students are eligible to apply. However, given the large student population, allocation is done on a priority basis. B.Arch students (being part of ZHCET) generally have access to the engineering hostels. Students who do not get hostel accommodation in the first year often find private paying guest (PG) accommodation near the campus at reasonable rates. The hostel fee at AMU is very nominal (approximately Rs. 800-1,500 per year for room rent), making it one of the most affordable residential options.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing B.Arch from AMU? Do companies come for campus placements?

Ans. B.Arch is a professional degree and career paths are diverse - graduates can work as licensed architects, urban planners, interior designers, project managers, or pursue higher studies like M.Arch or M.Plan. AMU's ZHCET does have a placement cell, but dedicated B.Arch-specific campus placements are limited compared to B.Tech branches. Most B.Arch graduates from AMU find employment through AMU's strong alumni network (particularly in the Gulf and Middle East), internships during the 5th year thesis, and self-driven job searches. AMU's alumni network is considered one of the strongest among Indian universities, which significantly helps architecture graduates in finding opportunities. Students are advised to build a strong portfolio and leverage the AMU alumni network actively.

Ques. Can I get admission to AMU B.Arch without appearing in AMUEEE if I have a good NATA score?

Ans. No, appearing in AMUEEE is mandatory for B.Arch admission at AMU. NATA score alone is not sufficient. AMU conducts its own entrance examination (AMUEEE) for B.Tech and B.Arch admissions, and candidates must appear in this exam to be considered for admission. The AMUEEE 2026 for B.Tech/B.Arch was held on 19 April 2026. Candidates who missed AMUEEE 2026 will not be eligible for AMU B.Arch 2026-27 admission regardless of their NATA score. For 2027-28 admissions, candidates should apply for AMUEEE 2027 when the application window opens (typically in February 2027).

Fees are very low, I must say least in the present era. The quality of education is far better in comparison to the fees to be paid. National Scholarship programs, and Uttar Pradesh govt scholarships are there for academic purposes. Other than that some other alumnus scholarships can avail.
