MGU Ph.D. FAQs
Ques. What does "Interdisciplinary" Ph.D. mean at MGU? Can I pursue research at the intersection of two different subjects?
Ans. At MGU, interdisciplinary Ph.D. research refers to doctoral work that spans two or more disciplines or subject areas. The university actively encourages this through its Inter-School Centres and Inter-University Centres (such as the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, School of Energy Materials, etc.) where research naturally crosses disciplinary boundaries. A candidate can have a primary supervisor from one department and a co-supervisor from another, enabling truly interdisciplinary work. For example, a candidate with an M.Sc. in Chemistry can pursue Ph.D. research in materials science, polymer science, environmental science, or even computational chemistry under appropriate supervisors. The key requirement is that the research topic and supervisor must be approved by the Research Advisory Committee (RAC).
Ques. Is UGC-NET mandatory for Ph.D. admission at MGU? What if I have only a GATE score?
Ans. UGC-NET is not the only qualifying examination accepted. MGU accepts UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, GPAT, JEST, SLET/SET, and other national-level tests recognised by UGC. Candidates with a valid GATE score are eligible to apply directly without appearing for the MGU Written Aptitude Test (WAT). Candidates who do not have any of these qualifications must appear for the WAT conducted by the respective School/Department. However, having a JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) rank in UGC-NET or CSIR-NET is strongly advantageous as it comes with a monthly stipend of Rs. 37,000, making the Ph.D. financially self-sustaining.
Ques. How many Ph.D. seats are available at MGU and what is the process for selecting a research supervisor?
Ans. MGU does not announce a fixed number of Ph.D. seats in advance - the number of available seats depends on the vacancy with each Research Supervisor. Each Professor can guide up to 8 scholars, Associate Professor up to 6, and Assistant Professor up to 4 at any given time. Candidates are advised to identify a potential supervisor in their area of interest before applying, and to contact the supervisor directly to discuss research topics and availability. The allocation of supervisor is done by the university based on the candidate's preference and the supervisor's availability, as recommended by the Research Advisory Committee.
Ques. Can I pursue a part-time Ph.D. at MGU while working? What are the conditions?
Ans. Yes, MGU permits part-time Ph.D. programmes for working professionals. The candidate must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer clearly stating that the employer has no objection to the candidate pursuing Ph.D. and that the research topic does not conflict with the employer's interests. Part-time scholars must attend the first spell of course work (January to March) in blended mode and the second spell (April to June) in offline mode at the Research Centre. The minimum duration for part-time Ph.D. is 3 years and maximum is 6 years (extendable to 8 years). The semester fee for part-time scholars is lower (Rs. 885 per semester) compared to full-time scholars (Rs. 2,635 per semester).
Ques. What are the research areas available for interdisciplinary Ph.D. at MGU? Which departments are strongest for research?
Ans. MGU offers Ph.D. research across virtually all disciplines including Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Geology), Engineering and Technology (Polymer Engineering, Nanoscience, Energy Science, Computer Science), Social Sciences (Economics, History, Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology), Humanities (Malayalam, English, Gandhian Studies), Management (MBA/Business Studies), Law (LLB/LLM), Education (M.Ed.), and Health Sciences. For interdisciplinary research, the strongest departments include the School of Polymer Science and Technology (SPST), School of Energy Materials (SEM), International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IIUCNN), School of Biosciences, and School of Environmental Sciences - all of which have strong funding, publications, and international collaborations.
Ques. How long does it typically take to complete a Ph.D. at MGU? What are the publication requirements?
Ans. The minimum duration for a Ph.D. at MGU is 3 years (including course work) and the maximum is 6 years, extendable to 8 years in exceptional cases. In practice, most full-time scholars in science and technology disciplines complete their Ph.D. in 4 to 5 years. For publication requirements, a scholar must publish at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed UGC-approved journal and present at least one paper at a national or international conference before submitting the thesis. The university uses plagiarism detection software to ensure research integrity, and the thesis must have a similarity index within acceptable limits before it is sent for external evaluation.
