MGU M.Sc CS FAQs
Ques. Is the MGU CAT 2026 application deadline really extended, and what happens if I miss it?
Ans. The MGU CAT 2026 application deadline was originally March 31, 2026, but has been officially extended to April 30, 2026, as announced on the CAT MGU portal (cat.mgu.ac.in). If you miss this extended deadline, there is no provision for late submission, and you will not be able to appear for the 2026 entrance examination. The next opportunity would be the CAT MGU 2027 cycle. It is strongly advised to complete the application well before the deadline to avoid last-minute technical issues on the portal.
Ques. Can students from non-Computer Science backgrounds apply for M.Sc. Computer Science at SOCS, MGU?
Ans. The eligibility requires a B.Sc. degree with Computer Science as the main subject, or BCA, or B.Tech. with Computer Science or allied areas as the main subject, with at least 50% marks in Part III. Students with a general B.Sc. in Mathematics or Physics without Computer Science as a main subject are not eligible. However, if your B.Sc. had Computer Science as a subsidiary or complementary subject only, you would not qualify. It is advisable to check your mark sheet carefully and confirm with the SOCS admission office (socs@mgu.ac.in or 0481 273 3364) before applying.
Ques. How competitive is the MGU CAT for M.Sc. Computer Science, and what score is typically needed to secure a seat?
Ans. The M.Sc. Computer Science programme at SOCS has only 25 seats under the state merit and reservation quota (plus a few additional quota seats), making it quite competitive. The CAT is a 60-question objective test covering Graduate Level Computer Science and Logical Reasoning. While MGU does not officially publish cut-off scores, students who have secured admission in recent years report that a score in the range of 35-45 out of 60 is generally competitive for the general category. SC/ST and other reserved category candidates have lower effective cut-offs. Thorough preparation in core Computer Science subjects (Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, DBMS, Computer Networks, Programming) along with Logical Reasoning is essential.
Ques. What is the difference between the M.Sc. Computer Science at SOCS (university school) and the same course offered in affiliated colleges under MGU?
Ans. SOCS is a statutory teaching department directly under MGU on the main campus, while affiliated colleges are separate institutions that offer M.Sc. Computer Science under MGU affiliation. Key differences include: (a) Fees at SOCS are significantly lower (around Rs. 21,705 for the full course) compared to self-financing affiliated colleges (which charge Rs. 25,200 per semester, totalling over Rs. 1 lakh for the full course); (b) SOCS has direct access to university research facilities, labs, and faculty; (c) Admission to SOCS is through the MGU CAT rank list, while affiliated colleges also use the CAT rank but have their own allotment process through CAP; (d) SOCS has a stronger research culture and alumni network in the IT industry.
Ques. Are there hostel facilities available for M.Sc. Computer Science students at MGU, and what are the approximate charges?
Ans. Yes, MGU has hostel facilities on its main campus at Priyadarsini Hills, Kottayam, for both male and female students. Hostel accommodation is not mandatory and is subject to availability. The hostel fees are charged separately from the course fees and are not included in the tuition fee structure. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early, as seats are limited. For the latest hostel fee details and availability, students should contact the university administration directly at the time of admission.
Ques. What career options are available after completing M.Sc. Computer Science from SOCS, MGU, and does the school provide placement support?
Ans. SOCS has a dedicated placement cell that organises campus placements and project internships for M.Sc. and M.Tech. students. The school has longstanding interactions with companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, Infosys, Wipro, Siemens, Lucent Technologies, C-DAC, C-DIT, NPOL, BARC, Keltron, and several other MNCs and R&D organisations. Students typically pursue careers as Software Engineers, Data Scientists, System Analysts, Research Associates, or opt for higher studies (Ph.D. or M.Tech.). The DSACS initiative at SOCS also provides Earn While You Learn internship opportunities during the programme itself. However, students should note that placement statistics specific to M.Sc. Computer Science are not publicly published by the school, and outcomes can vary based on individual performance and market conditions.
