MGU MHM FAQs
Ques. Is the MHM at MGU offered at the university campus or only at affiliated colleges?
Ans. The MHM programme at Mahatma Gandhi University is offered through MGU-affiliated colleges, not at the university campus directly. Colleges like Mount Royal College, Kottayam are among the affiliated institutions offering MHM under MGU. The degree, however, is awarded by Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Admission to all affiliated colleges offering MHM is done centrally through the CAT-MGU entrance test and the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP), so students get allotted to a specific college based on their rank and preference.
Ques. What is the difference between MHM and MTTM at MGU? Which is better for a hospitality career?
Ans. MHM (Master of Hotel Management) focuses specifically on hotel operations - food production, housekeeping, front office, food and beverage service, and hotel management. MTTM (Master of Tourism and Travel Management) is broader and covers tourism planning, travel agency operations, destination management, and tourism marketing. If your goal is to work in hotels, resorts, or food service, MHM is the more focused choice. If you are interested in travel agencies, tour operations, or tourism boards, MTTM would be more relevant. Both are 2-year programmes offered under MGU's PGCSS framework with similar fee structures.
Ques. What is the fee structure for MHM at MGU and does it vary by college?
Ans. The standard fee for MHM at unaided affiliated colleges under MGU is INR 21,000 per semester as per the official MGU CAP fee structure, totalling INR 84,000 for the full 2-year programme. However, individual colleges may charge additional fees such as university examination fees, admission fees, uniform charges, and tool kit charges. Some colleges like Mount Royal College charge INR 42,000 per semester as their institutional fee. It is important to check the exact fee breakup with the specific college you are allotted to during the CAP process.
Ques. What entrance exam is required for MHM admission at MGU and how is the selection done?
Ans. Admission to MHM at MGU-affiliated colleges is through the CAT-MGU (Common Admission Test of MG University), which is a centralized entrance test conducted by MGU. For 2026, the exam is scheduled from May 23 to 26, 2026. Based on the entrance test score, a rank list is prepared and allotment is done through the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP). There is no separate GD/PI for MHM unlike the MBA programme. The entire process is merit-based on the CAT-MGU score.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing MHM from MGU?
Ans. Graduates of MHM from MGU-affiliated colleges can pursue careers in hotel operations (front office, housekeeping, food and beverage), resort management, catering services, event management, food service management, and hospitality entrepreneurship. Kerala's thriving tourism and hospitality sector, including backwater resorts, heritage hotels, and international hotel chains operating in the state, provides strong local employment opportunities. Graduates can also appear for hotel management positions in national and international hotel chains. Some graduates also pursue further studies or hospitality certifications to advance their careers.
Ques. Can a non-hospitality graduate apply for MHM at MGU?
Ans. Yes. The eligibility for MHM at MGU requires a pass in any Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. There is no restriction on the stream of the undergraduate degree - graduates from arts, science, commerce, or any other discipline can apply. However, candidates with a background in hotel management, tourism, or hospitality (BHM, B.Sc. Hospitality, etc.) may have an advantage in the entrance test and practical components of the programme. Candidates from non-hospitality backgrounds are encouraged to familiarise themselves with basic hospitality concepts before appearing for the CAT-MGU entrance exam.
