MGU M.Com FAQs
Ques. Is M.Com e-Commerce a separate specialization at MGU, or is it part of another stream?
Ans. At Mahatma Gandhi University, M.Com does not have a standalone e-Commerce specialization. The three official elective streams are Finance and Taxation, Marketing and International Business, and Management and Information Technology. e-Commerce and e-Business Management is a core elective paper offered under the Management and Information Technology (Group 3) stream in Semester 4. So if you are looking for e-Commerce content, you should opt for the M.Com with Management and Information Technology specialization at an MGU-affiliated college that offers this stream.
Ques. How is the seat allotment done for M.Com at MGU affiliated colleges? Is there an entrance exam?
Ans. For M.Com admissions in affiliated colleges, there is no separate entrance exam. Admission is done through the MGU Centralized Allotment Process (PG CAP) based on merit in the qualifying examination (B.Com/BBA/BBM). The rank list is prepared by standardizing Part III marks to 1000, with applicable weightage. Candidates register on cap.mgu.ac.in, fill in their college and course preferences, and seats are allotted in multiple rounds. The MGU CAT (Common Admission Test) is only for admissions to University Schools and Departments, not for affiliated colleges.
Ques. What is the difference between aided and self-financing M.Com colleges under MGU? Which is better?
Ans. Aided colleges receive government funding, so their fees are significantly lower (often Rs. 1,800 per year as per government orders), but seats are limited and competition is higher. Self-financing colleges charge Rs. 21,000 per semester (Rs. 84,000 for the full programme, excluding other charges), but they may offer better infrastructure, more seats, and additional facilities. Both types follow the same MGU syllabus and award the same MGU degree. The choice depends on your budget, preferred location, and the specific college's academic reputation.
Ques. Can students from other universities apply for M.Com at MGU affiliated colleges?
Ans. Yes, students who have completed B.Com/BBA/BBM from universities other than MGU, Kerala University, or Kannur University can apply, but they must obtain an Equivalency/Eligibility Certificate from Mahatma Gandhi University before or at the time of admission. This certificate confirms that their qualifying degree is recognized as equivalent to MGU's degree. Without this certificate, the application may be rejected during document verification at the college.
Ques. What career options are available after completing M.Com (Management and Information Technology / e-Commerce) from MGU?
Ans. Graduates of M.Com with the Management and Information Technology stream from MGU can pursue careers in digital marketing, e-commerce management, ERP consulting, IT-enabled financial services, business analytics, and corporate management. They are also eligible to appear for UGC NET (Commerce) for lectureship and JRF, pursue CA/CMA/CS professional courses, or take up roles in banking, insurance, and financial services. The e-Commerce and e-Business Management paper specifically prepares students for roles in online retail, digital payment systems, and technology-driven business environments.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for M.Com students at MGU affiliated colleges?
Ans. Hostel availability depends on the specific affiliated college. MGU itself has hostel facilities on its main campus, but for students in affiliated colleges, hostel accommodation is managed by the respective college. Many affiliated colleges in Kottayam and surrounding districts offer hostel facilities for PG students, with fees typically ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000 per month depending on the college and type of accommodation. It is advisable to check directly with the college of your choice regarding hostel availability and charges before applying.
