MGU MBA FAQs
Ques. Is the MBA at SMBS, MGU a government college or a self-financing institution, and does that affect the fee?
Ans. SMBS (School of Management and Business Studies) is a statutory teaching department of Mahatma Gandhi University, which is a state university established by the Government of Kerala. It is NOT a self-financing private college. This is a significant advantage because the fee structure is regulated by the university and the government, making it one of the most affordable AICTE-approved MBA programmes in Kerala. The total tuition fee for the entire 2-year programme is approximately Rs. 50,380, which is substantially lower than most private MBA colleges in Kerala and across India.
Ques. What is the actual weightage of KMAT, CMAT, and CAT scores in the SMBS MBA admission process, and does a higher CAT score give a big advantage?
Ans. The entrance exam score (KMAT/CMAT/CAT) carries 80% weightage in the final index score, while Group Discussion and Personal Interview each carry 10%. So yes, a higher entrance exam score gives a significant advantage. However, since KMAT Kerala is a state-level exam and is specifically designed for Kerala MBA admissions, many applicants appear for KMAT. CAT scores are also accepted and can be advantageous if you have a strong percentile, but there is no separate weightage for CAT over KMAT or CMAT - all three are treated equally in the admission formula.
Ques. What specialisations are available in the MBA programme at SMBS, and when do students choose their specialisation?
Ans. SMBS offers specialisations in Finance, Human Resource Management (HRM), Marketing, Operations Management, and Business Analytics. Students choose their major and minor specialisation at the beginning of Semester 3. In Semester 3, students take 4 elective courses from their major functional area and 2 from their minor area. In Semester 4, students take 3 courses from the major area and 2 from the minor area, along with a problem-centred project and comprehensive viva. This dual specialisation structure allows students to develop depth in one area while gaining exposure to another.
Ques. How are placements at SMBS MGU, and what kind of companies recruit from the campus?
Ans. SMBS has an active placement cell that conducts pre-placement orientation, SAP training, business analytics training, and a Finishing School Programme to prepare students for corporate roles. Based on the 2023-25 batch placement brochure, students have been placed in companies such as Kochi Metro Rail Limited, MRF Limited, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Reliance Jio, Apollo Tyres, Quess Corp, SOBHA Ltd, and various other organisations across sectors including BFSI, IT/ITES, Manufacturing, and Services. The median salary for PG students at MGU as per NIRF 2025 data is approximately Rs. 5.5 LPA. However, placement percentages vary (25-70% as reported by students), and students are encouraged to actively participate in placement preparation activities.
Ques. Can students from outside Kerala or from universities other than MGU apply for the MBA at SMBS?
Ans. Yes, students from any university across India can apply for the MBA at SMBS, MGU. The programme has an All India Open/Merit Quota with 60 seats. However, candidates who have graduated from universities other than Mahatma Gandhi University must obtain an Eligibility/Recognition Certificate from MGU and a Migration Certificate/NOC from their parent university. These documents must be submitted at the time of the Group Discussion and Interview. The eligibility certificate process can take some time, so it is advisable to initiate this process well in advance of the GD/Interview date.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for MBA students at SMBS, and what are the facilities available?
Ans. SMBS provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls on the MGU campus at Priyadarshini Hills, Kottayam. The hostels are equipped with 24-hour internet connectivity and mess services. However, hostel accommodation is not guaranteed for all students and is subject to availability. Students interested in hostel accommodation should apply early and contact the SMBS office (04812733367 or smbs@mgu.ac.in) for details on availability and allotment. The campus also has smart classrooms, a communication lab, a department library, sports and fitness centres, and an auditorium, making it a well-equipped residential campus.
