MGU MA Cinema & TV FAQs
Ques. Is MA Cinema and Television offered at the MGU main campus in Kottayam, or only at affiliated colleges?
Ans. MA Cinema and Television is not offered at the MGU main campus (Priyadarsini Hills, Kottayam). It is offered at two MGU-affiliated self-financing colleges: St. Joseph College of Communication (SJCC), Changanacherry, and Ayyappa Institute of Management Studies, Peerumade, Idukki. Both colleges are recognized by MGU and follow the MGU syllabus and examination pattern. The degree awarded is from Mahatma Gandhi University.
Ques. Is the admission to MA Cinema and Television based on MGU CAT, or does each college conduct its own test?
Ans. Unlike most PG programmes at MGU university departments which require the MGU CAT entrance exam, admission to MA Cinema and Television at affiliated colleges is based on an aptitude test and portfolio/interview conducted by the respective college. Candidates must submit a portfolio of their creative works (films, videos, photographs, design work, etc.) as part of the application. The merit list is prepared based on the aptitude test score, portfolio evaluation, and interview performance.
Ques. What kind of portfolio is required for admission to MA Cinema and Television under MGU?
Ans. The portfolio should showcase the candidate's creative work in visual media. This can include short films, video projects, photography, graphic design work, animation clips, or any other visual/audio-visual content the candidate has produced. The portfolio demonstrates the candidate's aptitude for cinema and television production. Candidates from non-media backgrounds who have a diploma in multimedia or visual communication should ensure their portfolio reflects their practical skills in the field.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing MA Cinema and Television from an MGU-affiliated college?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as film directors, assistant directors, cinematographers, video editors, screenwriters, television producers, broadcast journalists, content creators for OTT platforms, documentary filmmakers, and media educators. Kerala's thriving Malayalam film industry and the growing OTT content market offer significant opportunities. Graduates can also appear for UGC-NET in Mass Communication and Journalism to pursue teaching or research careers. Some graduates also work as broadcast design consultants, cinema operations executives, and media production managers.
Ques. What is the total fee for MA Cinema and Television under MGU, and are there any scholarships available for self-financing students?
Ans. The total tuition fee for the 2-year programme is Rs. 1,61,280 (Rs. 40,320 per semester for 4 semesters), plus university and other fees amounting to approximately Rs. 6,300, bringing the total to around Rs. 1,67,580. SC/ST/OBC and economically weaker section students from Kerala can avail E-Grantz and other government scholarships that cover tuition fees and provide maintenance allowance. Students are advised to apply for these scholarships at the beginning of each academic year through the respective portals.
Ques. What is the difference between MA Cinema and Television at SJCC Changanacherry and Ayyappa Institute, Peerumade?
Ans. Both colleges offer MA Cinema and Television under MGU affiliation with the same university syllabus and examination pattern. SJCC (St. Joseph College of Communication), Changanacherry, is a well-established media college with a strong industry network, modern production studios, and a track record in media education since its founding. Ayyappa Institute of Management Studies, Peerumade, is located in the scenic Idukki district and offers a more intimate learning environment. The choice between the two depends on factors like location preference, infrastructure, faculty, and individual college fees. Both award the MGU degree upon successful completion.
