Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, offers the 3-year Unitary LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) programme through its affiliated law colleges across the university's jurisdiction in Kerala. The programme is a full-time, on-campus, 6-semester course designed for graduates who wish to pursue a career in law, judiciary, legal practice, or corporate legal services. Admission to the 3-year LLB in MGU-affiliated colleges is conducted through KLEE (Kerala Law Entrance Exam), a state-level entrance test conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala, followed by a Centralised Allotment Process (CAP). As of April 2026, the KLEE 2026 notification is expected in May 2026 and the exam is likely to be conducted in June 2026. The CAP allotment process for 2026-27 commenced on 21 July 2026, with option registration open until 27 July 2026. The 2026-27 admission cycle is expected to follow a similar timeline.

MGU LL.B. FAQs

Ques. Is KLEE mandatory for admission to 3-year LLB in MGU-affiliated colleges, or can I apply directly?

Ans. KLEE (Kerala Law Entrance Exam) is mandatory for admission to government seats (100% in government law colleges and 50% in private self-financing law colleges) in MGU-affiliated law colleges. These seats are allotted through the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) conducted by CEE Kerala. The remaining 50% management quota seats in private self-financing colleges are filled directly by the respective colleges, and KLEE may or may not be required for those seats depending on the college's admission policy. Candidates are advised to check with individual colleges for management quota admission procedures.

Ques. Which MGU-affiliated law colleges offer the 3-year LLB, and how do I choose the best one?

Ans. Several law colleges in the MGU jurisdiction offer the 3-year LLB, including government law colleges (Ernakulam, Thrissur) and private self-financing colleges such as CSI College of Legal Studies (Kottayam), St. Dominic's College of Law (Kanjirappally), Mount Zion Law College (Pathanamthitta), and others. Government law colleges are preferred for their low fees and strong academic reputation. When choosing a college, consider factors such as BCI approval status, faculty quality, moot court facilities, library resources, placement support, and proximity to courts for internship opportunities.

Ques. What is the difference between the 3-year LLB and the 5-year BBA LLB at MGU?

Ans. The 3-year Unitary LLB is a postgraduate-level law programme for candidates who already hold a graduation degree. It focuses entirely on law subjects across 6 semesters. The 5-year BBA LL.B. (Hons.) offered by MGU's School of Indian Legal Thought (SILT) is an integrated programme for candidates who have completed Class 12, combining business administration and law over 10 semesters. The 5-year programme is offered only at SILT on the MGU main campus with 50 seats, while the 3-year LLB is available at multiple affiliated colleges. Both degrees qualify graduates to enrol as advocates after clearing AIBE.

Ques. After completing the 3-year LLB from an MGU-affiliated college, what are the career options?

Ans. Graduates of the 3-year LLB from MGU-affiliated colleges can pursue careers as advocates (after clearing AIBE - All India Bar Examination), judicial officers (through Kerala Judicial Service Examination or other state/central judicial exams), legal advisors in corporate firms, government legal departments, or NGOs. They can also pursue higher studies such as LLM (2-year postgraduate law programme) at MGU's SILT or other law schools, or specialised courses in areas like intellectual property, taxation, or international law. Many graduates also appear for UPSC Civil Services and other competitive exams where a law background is advantageous.

Ques. Is there any age limit for the 3-year LLB programme at MGU-affiliated colleges?

Ans. There is no upper age limit for admission to the 3-year LLB programme. This makes it accessible to working professionals, career changers, and individuals who wish to pursue law at any stage of their career. The only requirement is a graduation degree with the minimum prescribed marks. This is in contrast to the 5-year integrated LLB programmes, which have an age limit (typically below 20 years for general category candidates).

Ques. What is AIBE and is it mandatory after completing LLB from an MGU-affiliated college?

Ans. AIBE (All India Bar Examination) is a mandatory examination conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for all law graduates who wish to practise as advocates in India. After completing the 3-year LLB from an MGU-affiliated BCI-approved college, graduates must enrol with the Bar Council of Kerala and then clear AIBE to obtain a Certificate of Practice. AIBE is an open-book exam with 100 multiple-choice questions covering various law subjects. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Graduates can enrol as advocates and begin practising under a senior advocate even before clearing AIBE, but the Certificate of Practice is required for independent practice.

Fees and Financial Aid:

So the fee structure when I was studying like Rs.50,000/- was paid as repayable deposit and in addition to that Rs. Rs.26,000/- was paid every year or annually.Every year the amount of fees that is to be paid is increasing now I think it has increased upto Rs.1,00,000/- as repayable deposit. And annual fees has raised uptoRs. 30,000 or above. The management fees was Rs.10,000/- higher to the merit seat fees. So if I has to pay 26,000 rs as my annual fees management seats candidates have to 36,000/- as their annual fees. There is a scholarship provided by our honorable prime minister which is the vidyalakshmi loan and the student have to repay within 15 years only.
