MGU B.Ed FAQs
Ques. What subjects can I choose for B.Ed at MGU, and does my graduation subject matter?
Ans. Yes, the optional subject for B.Ed must correspond to the main/core subject studied at the degree level. MGU offers B.Ed in English, Malayalam, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Social Science, and Commerce. For example, a B.Sc graduate with Mathematics as the main subject can apply for B.Ed Mathematics. Commerce graduates are eligible only for B.Ed Commerce, and only if they hold an M.Com degree with 50% marks - a B.Com alone is not sufficient for B.Ed Commerce.
Ques. What is the difference in fees between aided and unaided B.Ed colleges under MGU?
Ans. The fee difference is substantial. In aided colleges, the total fee for the 2-year programme is approximately Rs. 5,970 (including a refundable caution deposit of Rs. 360), making it one of the most affordable professional programmes in Kerala. In unaided/self-financing colleges, merit seat fees are Rs. 45,000 per annum (Rs. 90,000 for 2 years), and management quota seats cost Rs. 60,000 per annum (Rs. 1,20,000 for 2 years). SC/ST students in aided colleges pay only Rs. 100 as caution deposit.
Ques. Is there any entrance exam for B.Ed admission at MGU?
Ans. No. MGU B.Ed admission is entirely merit-based through the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP). The rank list is prepared based on index marks calculated from the qualifying degree marks, with bonus marks for NCC/NSS certificates (10 marks each) and weightage for PG qualifications (5 to 15 marks depending on percentage). There is no written entrance examination.
Ques. How are bonus marks calculated for the MGU B.Ed rank list?
Ans. Bonus marks are added to the index marks as follows: NCC B or C Certificate holders receive 10 bonus marks; NSS Certificate holders (240 hours of work in 2 years of UG study) receive 10 bonus marks. PG weightage is given as 15 marks for 75% and above, 10 marks for 60% and above, and 5 marks for 50% and above in the PG degree in the relevant subject. A handicap of 5 marks is deducted for each additional attempt taken to pass the qualifying examination. Note that NCC and NSS bonus marks cannot be claimed simultaneously - only one can be availed.
Ques. Can I apply for B.Ed at MGU if I graduated from a university outside Kerala?
Ans. Yes, graduates from universities outside Kerala can apply, but they must submit a Programme-wise Eligibility Certificate from Mahatma Gandhi University at the time of admission, confirming that their qualifying examination is recognized for the relevant B.Ed programme. This certificate must be obtained from MGU before the admission date. Candidates from outside Kerala universities should factor in the additional time required to obtain this certificate.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing B.Ed from an MGU-affiliated college?
Ans. A B.Ed from an MGU-affiliated college qualifies graduates to apply for government school teaching positions in Kerala through the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) Teacher Recruitment. Graduates can also apply for private school teaching jobs, central government school positions (KVS, NVS), and CBSE/ICSE school teaching roles across India. Many B.Ed graduates also pursue M.Ed for higher academic and administrative roles in education. The B.Ed qualification is mandatory for teaching at the secondary level (Classes 6-10) as per NCTE norms.
