MGU BA Music FAQs
Ques. Is B.A. Music at MGU available only at RLV College, Tripunithura?
Ans. Yes, RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura (Ernakulam) is the only MGU-affiliated college that offers B.A. Music. It is a government institution established in 1937 and affiliated to MGU since 1998. The college is widely regarded as one of the finest institutions for classical music and performing arts education in South India, offering all four music specializations - Vocal, Violin, Veena, and Mridangam - along with performing arts and fine arts programmes.
Ques. What is the difference between the four B.A. Music specializations - Vocal, Violin, Veena, and Mridangam?
Ans. Each specialization focuses on a specific instrument or vocal tradition within Carnatic classical music. Vocal (Carnatic) trains students in classical singing, ragas, and compositions. Violin and Veena are string instruments central to Carnatic music, with Veena being the traditional instrument of South Indian classical music. Mridangam is the primary percussion instrument in Carnatic music. Students must choose one specialization at the time of application and appear for the aptitude test in that specific discipline. Switching between specializations after admission is generally not permitted.
Ques. Is prior formal training in music required to apply for B.A. Music at RLV College?
Ans. While there is no mandatory formal certification required, the aptitude test and interview are designed to assess the candidate's existing skill and aptitude in the chosen music specialization. In practice, most successful candidates have had prior training in Carnatic music (typically 5-10 years of learning under a guru or at a music school). Candidates with no prior training are unlikely to clear the aptitude test. Students who have completed lower-grade examinations from institutions like the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi or similar bodies have an advantage.
Ques. What are the career options after completing B.A. Music from MGU?
Ans. Graduates of B.A. Music can pursue careers as performing artists, music teachers, music directors, accompanists, and cultural programme coordinators. Many graduates pursue M.A. Music (offered at RLV College itself) and then qualify for lecturer/assistant professor positions in music colleges and universities through NET/SET examinations. Career opportunities also exist in All India Radio (AIR), Doordarshan, cultural organizations, and private music academies. Some graduates also pursue careers in film music, fusion music, and music therapy.
Ques. What is the seat intake for each B.A. Music specialization at RLV College?
Ans. The seat intake is limited for each specialization. Based on historical admission data, the approximate seat intake is: Vocal - around 25 seats, Violin - around 15 seats, Veena - around 10-15 seats, and Mridangam - around 10-15 seats. Seats are distributed across Open Quota, SC/ST, and Community Merit categories as per MGU CAP norms. Candidates should verify the exact seat count for the current year on the CAP portal (cap.mgu.ac.in) at the time of application, as seat intake may vary year to year.
Ques. Can students from Science or Commerce stream in Class 12 apply for B.A. Music at MGU?
Ans. Yes, unlike most science-based programmes, B.A. Music at MGU has no stream restriction. Students from any stream - Science, Commerce, or Arts - who have passed Plus Two (Class 12) are eligible to apply, provided they demonstrate the required aptitude and skill in the chosen music specialization through the aptitude test and interview at RLV College. This makes B.A. Music one of the few MGU programmes accessible to students from all academic backgrounds.
