The Bachelor of Arts in Malayalam is a 3-year full-time undergraduate programme offered through affiliated colleges of Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, Kerala. The course covers Malayalam language, classical and modern Malayalam literature, poetry, prose, drama, literary criticism, translation, and the history of Malayalam literature from Sangam period to contemporary times. Seat intake per college typically ranges from 30 to 60 seats. The programme is offered in regular full-time mode, requiring students to attend college on campus. BA Malayalam at MGU is one of the most popular undergraduate programmes in the region, particularly among students who wish to pursue careers in Malayalam teaching, journalism, media, translation, and civil services, as well as those planning to pursue MA Malayalam or other postgraduate programmes.

Admissions for the 2026-27 academic year will be conducted through the Centralized Allotment Process (CAP) by MGU, which commences immediately after the publication of Kerala Plus Two (Higher Secondary) results. Based on the 2025 schedule, the CAP process typically begins in late May and closes by end of September. The 2026 UGP CAP has been announced and will begin after Plus Two results are published (expected May-June 2026). Classes for the new batch typically commence from July 1 onwards.

Key Points

  • The BA Malayalam programme at MGU-affiliated colleges follows the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) framework under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, offering multiple exit options with certificates, diplomas, and degrees.
  • The course covers the entire spectrum of Malayalam literature from ancient Manipravalam texts to contemporary Malayalam fiction and poetry, providing a deep understanding of Kerala's literary heritage.
  • Graduates with a BA Malayalam degree can appear for the Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) and Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) for Malayalam teaching positions in schools.
  • The programme is offered in both aided and self-financing colleges affiliated to MGU, with a significant difference in fee structure.
  • MGU's jurisdiction (Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha) is the heartland of Malayalam literature, making this programme particularly rich in cultural context.

MGU BA FAQs

Ques. Is Malayalam as a subject in Plus Two required for admission to BA Malayalam at MGU?

Ans. No, having Malayalam as a subject in Plus Two is not a mandatory requirement for admission to BA Malayalam at MGU-affiliated colleges. Admission is based on overall Plus Two marks through the CAP process. However, since the course is taught entirely in Malayalam and covers advanced Malayalam literature from the first semester, students with a strong foundation in Malayalam language and literature will find the programme much more manageable. Students from Science or Commerce streams who have Malayalam as a second language can also apply.

Ques. What career options are available after BA Malayalam from MGU?

Ans. Graduates of BA Malayalam have a wide range of career options. The most common path is Malayalam teaching in schools (after clearing K-TET and B.Ed) or college lecturing (after clearing UGC NET in Malayalam). Other options include Malayalam journalism and media (print, digital, and broadcast), content writing, translation, and script writing for films and television. Graduates can also appear for Kerala PSC examinations where Malayalam language proficiency is an advantage, and for UPSC Civil Services with Malayalam Literature as an optional subject in Mains.

Ques. Can I pursue MA Malayalam at MGU after completing BA Malayalam from an affiliated college?

Ans. Yes, BA Malayalam graduates from MGU-affiliated colleges are directly eligible to apply for MA Malayalam at MGU's School of Letters or through affiliated PG colleges. The eligibility typically requires a minimum of 50% marks in Part III (core) subjects in the BA degree. Admission to MA Malayalam at MGU is through the CAT-MGU entrance examination conducted by the university each year. After MA Malayalam, graduates can pursue PhD in Malayalam or appear for UGC NET to become college lecturers.

Ques. Is BA Malayalam a good choice for students interested in Malayalam cinema and media?

Ans. Yes, BA Malayalam provides an excellent foundation for students interested in Malayalam cinema, media, and the entertainment industry. The course covers Malayalam drama, script writing, and literary criticism, which are directly relevant to film and media careers. Many successful Malayalam screenwriters, directors, and journalists have a background in Malayalam literature. After BA Malayalam, students can pursue specialized courses in mass communication, journalism, or film studies to further their career in the media industry.

Ques. What is the scope of Malayalam translation as a career after BA Malayalam from MGU?

Ans. Malayalam translation is a growing career field, particularly with the increasing demand for Malayalam content in digital media, e-governance, and publishing. Graduates of BA Malayalam can work as translators for government departments, publishing houses, legal firms, and media organizations. The Kerala government's official communications and documents require Malayalam translation, creating steady demand for qualified translators. Graduates can also appear for the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Junior Hindi Translator examination or work as freelance translators for international organizations.

Ques. How does the BA Malayalam programme at MGU compare to BA Malayalam at other Kerala universities like Calicut University or Kerala University?

Ans. The BA Malayalam programme at MGU follows the same FYUGP framework under NEP 2020 as other Kerala universities, with a broadly similar curriculum covering classical and modern Malayalam literature. The key difference lies in the affiliated colleges - MGU's jurisdiction covers Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, which are home to many renowned Malayalam literary figures and institutions. The quality of the programme depends significantly on the individual college, its faculty, and library resources. Students should research specific colleges before applying rather than comparing universities in general.
