MGU BA(JMC) FAQs
Ques. Is there any entrance exam required for admission to BA Journalism and Mass Communication at MGU-affiliated colleges?
Ans. No, there is no entrance exam for UG admissions at MGU-affiliated colleges. Admission is entirely merit-based through the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP). Your rank is determined by your Plus Two marks, with additional weightage for relevant optional subjects and bonus marks for NCC/NSS/Scouts. You simply register online at cap.mgu.ac.in, submit your college and programme preferences, and allotments are made based on your rank. CUET scores are not accepted or required for MGU UG admissions.
Ques. What is the difference between BA Journalism and Mass Communication at a government/aided college versus a self-financing college under MGU?
Ans. The primary difference is in fees and seat availability. Government and aided colleges charge significantly lower fees (total course fees around Rs. 34,680 for 4 years), while self-financing colleges charge around Rs. 21,000 per year as tuition alone. The syllabus and degree awarded are the same (MGU-UGP Honours), as all affiliated colleges follow the MGU curriculum. However, infrastructure, faculty quality, and media lab facilities can vary between colleges. Aided colleges are more competitive to get into due to lower fees and higher demand.
Ques. What career options are available after completing BA (Honours) Journalism and Mass Communication from MGU?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as reporters, news anchors, editors, photojournalists, content writers, social media managers, public relations executives, advertising copywriters, documentary filmmakers, and media researchers. In Kerala, there is strong demand from regional TV channels, newspapers, digital news portals, and PR agencies. Graduates can also pursue postgraduate programmes such as MA Journalism and Mass Communication or MJMC at MGU or other universities, or appear for UPSC/state PSC exams for information and public relations roles.
Ques. Does the 4-year Honours programme offer exit options, and what happens if I want to leave after 2 or 3 years?
Ans. Yes, under the NEP-based MGU-UGP framework, the 4-year Honours programme offers multiple exit options. After completing 1 year, you receive a Certificate in Journalism and Mass Communication. After 2 years, you receive a Diploma. After 3 years, you receive a Bachelor's degree (without Honours). After 4 years, you receive the full BA (Honours) degree. If you exit early, you can re-enter the programme within a specified period to complete the remaining years, as per MGU's Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) policy.
Ques. Are there media lab and practical training facilities available at MGU-affiliated colleges for this course?
Ans. The availability of media labs, studios, and practical training facilities varies by affiliated college. Colleges like St. Joseph's College of Communication (Changanacherry) and other dedicated media colleges under MGU have well-equipped studios and labs. For general arts colleges offering this programme, facilities may be more basic. It is strongly recommended to visit the specific college or check their website before finalising your admission choice, as practical exposure is critical for a journalism career.
Ques. Can students from outside Kerala apply for BA Journalism and Mass Communication at MGU-affiliated colleges?
Ans. Yes, students from outside Kerala can apply through the MGU UGP CAP process. However, they must have passed Plus Two or an equivalent examination recognised by MGU. Non-Keralite students do not get the benefit of communal reservation (SEBC/SC/ST quotas under Kerala norms) but can compete for open quota seats. Additionally, 10% of seats in government colleges are reserved for EWS candidates, and an additional 10% of seats (over and above sanctioned strength) are reserved for international students. Non-resident students should also note that hostel availability at affiliated colleges is limited and should be confirmed in advance.
