MGU BMLT FAQs
Ques. Is there any entrance exam required for admission to B.Sc. MLT at MGU Kottayam?
Ans. No, there is no separate entrance exam for B.Sc. MLT admission at MGU/CPAS. Admission is entirely merit-based on the marks obtained in the Plus Two (10+2) examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Candidates need to register through the LBS Centre (for Government quota seats) or CPAS (for CPAS quota seats) and submit their qualifying exam marks. The rank list is prepared based on these marks, and allotment is done centrally.
Ques. What is the difference between the LBS quota and CPAS quota for B.Sc. MLT admission?
Ans. 50% of the total seats in each centre are filled through the Government allotment process managed by the LBS Centre for Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. These are essentially Government-sponsored seats. The remaining 50% are CPAS quota seats, filled through a rank list prepared by CPAS based on qualifying exam marks. Both quotas follow the same fee structure for CPAS/Government seats. NRI seats are available only in the CPAS quota at select centres.
Ques. Which centres offer B.Sc. MLT under CPAS/SME, and how many seats are available at each?
Ans. B.Sc. MLT is offered at four SME centres: Gandhinagar, Kottayam (30 seats), Puthuppally (30 seats), Manimalakunnu/Koothattukulam (30 seats), and Angamaly (40 seats) - totalling 130 seats. Centralized admission for all centres is conducted at SME, Gandhinagar, Kottayam. Students can submit centre preferences during the allotment process, and seats are allocated based on rank and preference.
Ques. What is the total fee for B.Sc. MLT at CPAS/SME under MGU, and are there any hidden charges?
Ans. The total fee for a CPAS/Government seat is Rs. 4,42,565 for the entire 4-year course, as per the official fee structure. This includes tuition fees (Rs. 93,000 per year), special fees (lab, library, stationery, etc.), admission fee, and caution deposit. The caution deposit of Rs. 10,000 is refundable at the end of the course. Examination fees payable to KUHS are separate and not included in this total. Transportation charges, if availed, are at actual rates and are also not included.
Ques. Can SC/ST students get full fee waiver for B.Sc. MLT at CPAS/SME?
Ans. Yes, SC/ST and OEC (Other Eligible Community) students are eligible for a full fee waiver under the E-Grantz scheme of the Government of Kerala. Under this scheme, eligible students pay only Rs. 12,000 in the first year (Rs. 2,000 admission fee + Rs. 10,000 caution deposit) and nothing in subsequent years. The fee is sanctioned directly through the E-Grantz portal. Students must apply through E-Grantz at the time of admission and ensure their income and caste certificates are in order.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing B.Sc. MLT from MGU/CPAS?
Ans. Graduates of B.Sc. MLT are eligible for employment as Medical Laboratory Technologists in government and private hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood banks, research institutions, and public health departments. In Kerala, government job opportunities exist through Kerala PSC (Public Service Commission) for the post of Lab Technician in government hospitals. Graduates can also pursue M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology or related PG programmes. With Kerala's strong healthcare sector and the growing demand for diagnostic services, B.Sc. MLT graduates have good employment prospects both within the state and abroad, particularly in Gulf countries.
