NITTE MPH FAQs
Q1: What is the difference between MPH and other public health programs?
Ans. The MPH (Master of Public Health) is a specialized 2-year postgraduate program designed to develop comprehensive public health professionals with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, and public health management. Unlike shorter diploma programs, the MPH provides in-depth theoretical knowledge combined with extensive practical experience through fieldwork, internships, and research. The program at Nitte emphasizes global health perspectives with international collaborations and opportunities to study at leading universities abroad.
Q2: Can I pursue MPH if my background is not in health sciences?
Ans. Yes, the MPH program at Nitte is designed for graduates from diverse backgrounds. While health science graduates (MBBS, BDS, BPharm, BPT, BSc Nursing) are preferred, the program also accepts graduates from Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Social Work, Engineering (including Environmental Engineering), Management, Commerce, and Humanities with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate. Your educational background and professional experience relevant to public health will be considered during the selection process.
Q3: What are the career prospects after completing MPH from Nitte?
Ans. MPH graduates have diverse career opportunities in government health departments, national and international NGOs, United Nations agencies (WHO, UNICEF, UNDP), pharmaceutical companies, insurance agencies, and corporate organizations. Roles include epidemiologist, health program manager, policy analyst, research coordinator, and public health consultant. The field offers opportunities both in India and internationally, with growing demand for qualified public health professionals in healthcare policy, disease surveillance, and health promotion.
Q4: What is the internship component of the MPH program?
Ans. The MPH program includes a comprehensive 2-month internship as part of the curriculum. Students undertake internships in reputed public health organizations, government health departments, NGOs, or international agencies. This hands-on experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world public health challenges, develop practical skills, and build professional networks. Internships can be completed in India or abroad, depending on student interests and organizational opportunities.
Q5: Are there opportunities for international exposure during the MPH program?
Ans. Yes, the MPH program at Nitte has active partnerships with the University of Minnesota (USA) and University of Gothenburg (Sweden). Meritorious students get the opportunity to visit Summer School at these universities during spring and autumn with scholarships covering tuition fees. This international exposure enhances students' understanding of global health issues, exposes them to different healthcare systems, and provides networking opportunities with international public health professionals.
Q6: What specializations or electives are available in the MPH program?
Ans. The MPH program offers flexibility through discipline-specific and general electives. In Semester II, students can choose between Advanced Epidemiology or Maternal, Child & Gender Health studies as discipline-specific electives. General electives include Basics of Photography, English for Research Paper Writing, Psychology of Stress Health and Well-Being, and Money Banking and Financial Markets.
