Christ University MA Applied Sociology FAQs

Q1. What is the difference between MA Applied Sociology and MA Sociology offered at other universities?

Ans. The MA Applied Sociology at Christ University is specifically designed with a practical, applied orientation. Unlike conventional MA Sociology programmes that focus primarily on theory, this programme introduces students to applied domains such as Corporate Sociology, HR, PR, CSR, Sociology of Health, and Sociology of Media. The emphasis on both quantitative and qualitative research methods, combined with a mandatory internship and dissertation, makes graduates job-ready across diverse sectors.

Q2. What career options are available after MA Applied Sociology from Christ University?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in social research, data analysis, public relations, policy making, NGOs, government bodies, corporate HR and CSR departments, healthcare administration, media organisations, and academia. The interdisciplinary curriculum also prepares students for roles in development sector organisations, think tanks, and international organisations. Many alumni also pursue PhD programmes in Sociology or related disciplines.

Q3. Is the MA Applied Sociology programme at Christ University suitable for students from non-sociology backgrounds?

Ans. Yes, the eligibility criterion requires only a minimum of 50% aggregate in any UG degree. Students from Psychology, Political Science, Social Work, Economics, or even Science and Commerce backgrounds are eligible and have successfully completed the programme. The curriculum is designed to build sociological knowledge from foundational concepts, making it accessible to students from diverse academic backgrounds.

Q4. What is the internship component in the MA Applied Sociology programme?

Ans. A mandatory one-month summer internship is included in Year 2. Students typically intern with NGOs, government departments, research organisations, corporate CSR departments, healthcare institutions, or media organisations. The internship provides practical exposure to applying sociological knowledge in real-world settings and is a key differentiator of the programme.

Q5. Does Christ University's MA Applied Sociology accept CUET-PG scores?

Ans. Yes, CUET-PG scores are accepted for shortlisting. However, all shortlisted candidates must appear for the Selection Process (SA_MP_PI: Skill Assessment, Micro Presentation, and Personal Interview) in person at the campus. The selection process evaluates both academic performance and aptitude for sociological inquiry.

Q6. How does the MA Applied Sociology programme at Christ University prepare students for research careers?

Ans. The programme places a strong emphasis on research skills. Students learn both quantitative methods (surveys, statistical analysis) and qualitative methods (interviews, content analysis, ethnography). Regular seminars involve presentation of research findings and scholarly debates. The dissertation in Year 2 requires students to conduct independent research on a sociological topic of their choice, providing a strong foundation for doctoral studies or research careers.
