BAOU Admission Dates 2026

BAOU conducts admissions twice a year, in July and January. For the July 2026 session, applications are open across all UG, PG, Diploma, Certificate, and PhD programmes. Admission is processed through the GCAS portal and does not require an entrance examination for most programmes. The July 2026 session application window has been extended and remains active through September 2026.

BAOU Courses and Fees

BAOU offers over 80 programmes across UG, PG, Diploma, Certificate, and PhD levels through its four academic schools. The fee structure is designed to keep higher education accessible, with UG programme fees starting at INR 6,500 (B.Lib.I.Sc) and going up to INR 80,000 (B.Sc Data Science) for specialised technology programmes.

BAOU also offers short-duration Diploma and Certificate programmes ranging from INR 1,100 (Certified Course in Food and Nutrition) to INR 15,000 (PGDCA, PG Diploma in Cyber Law, PG Diploma in Cyber Security). These programmes target skill upgradation and professional development.

BAOU Admission Process

BAOU follows an open-admission model for most UG and PG programmes, meaning there is no common entrance test. Candidates apply directly through the GCAS portal with academic qualification as the primary criterion. The university offers ODL (Open and Distance Learning) programmes and fully online programmes through its Centre for Online Education (COE).

UG Programmes (BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA, B.Sc, BSW, B.Ed, B.Lib.I.Sc)

Eligibility for all UG programmes requires passing the 10+2 or equivalent examination. B.Ed requires a prior graduation degree with a minimum of 50% marks. Technology programmes (BCA, B.Sc IT, Cyber Security, Data Science) require Mathematics or Science at 10+2 level.

PG Programmes (MA, MBA, M.Com, MCA, M.Sc, MSW)

PG admissions require a graduation degree in a relevant discipline. MBA admits graduates from any discipline. MCA and M.Sc (IT/Cyber Security) require a BCA, B.Sc (IT), or a graduation degree with Mathematics. Admission is merit-based with no entrance test for most PG programmes.

PhD Programme

PhD admission at BAOU involves an entrance test followed by an interview with the research admission committee. Candidates must hold a PG degree with a minimum of 55% marks. The entrance test evaluates research aptitude and subject knowledge. SC/ST and PwD candidates are eligible for a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks requirement.

BAOU caters primarily to working professionals, women learners in rural and semi-urban areas of Gujarat, and students unable to attend conventional colleges. The open-admission model ensures no candidate is screened out by entrance barriers for most programmes. Learners in government or semi-government employment find the flexible ODL schedule compatible with their service obligations.

BAOU Rankings

BAOU participates in the NIRF Open University rankings and has consistently placed among the top open universities in India. In NIRF 2024, BAOU was ranked 3rd among all open universities in India, behind IGNOU (1st) and Netaji Subhash Open University (2nd).

BAOU’s NAAC A++ accreditation, awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, is the highest grade in the NAAC framework. BAOU was the first open university in Gujarat and one of very few state open universities nationally to achieve the A++ distinction. The university is also DEB-approved (Distance Education Bureau), which is mandatory for offering ODL programmes with degree validity.

BAOU Scholarships

BAOU learners can access a range of government-funded and university-specific scholarships. The university’s own fee structure already provides a 33% fee concession for women across all programmes. Additional scholarship support is available through state and central government schemes.

SC/ST learners applying for the Post-Matric scholarship must complete their application on the Digital Gujarat portal between July and September each year. SEBC learners follow a separate application window. All scholarship applications require the learner to first complete BAOU admission formalities and obtain an enrolment number.

BAOU Campus and Infrastructure

BAOU’s main campus is located at Jyotirmay Parisar, Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, Chharodi, Ahmedabad. The headquarters houses the administrative offices, academic schools, the Vivekanand Library, and an electronic media production facility used to produce audio-visual study content.

The university operates 9 Regional Centres at key cities across Gujarat, supplemented by over 300 Learner Support Centres (Study Centres) spread across all districts. Each study centre provides learners with access to academic counselling, printed study materials, and examination facilities, reducing the need for learners to travel to Ahmedabad.

BAOU’s digital infrastructure includes the Eklavya student portal for academic management, Omkar-e for streaming video lectures, Swadhyay TV and Radio for broadcast-based learning, and virtual classroom facilities for live interaction with faculty. SWAYAM-NPTEL courses are integrated into the curriculum to allow learners to earn additional credits through the national e-learning platform.

BAOU vs Karnataka State Open University vs UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University

Aspirants choosing an open university for distance or online education typically compare BAOU with other NIRF-ranked state open universities. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) and UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) are the two closest comparables, both NIRF-ranked open universities with similar programme offerings.

BAOU leads in NAAC grade and enrolled learner base, making it a strong choice for Gujarat-domicile learners who benefit from the state scholarship ecosystem. KSOU has a slightly stronger NIRF 2024 position and a broader national reach outside Karnataka. UPRTOU is the preferred option for Hindi-medium learners in UP who want affordable distance education. None of the three universities offer traditional campus placements, as all three primarily serve working professionals and learners in distance mode.
