Why study this course with us?
- Managing natural hazards is becoming increasingly complex due to a combination of factors, including the spread of cities into hazard-prone areas and the influence of climate change (e.g. more intense/frequent and irregular hurricanes). Managing these hazards therefore needs a holistic and multidisciplinary approach, which is what NHM at Chester provides. This ranges from studying volcanic processes and developing policies and emergency plans, to the use of the latest technology (e.g. dones) to map disaster areas. The range of skills developed as part of this course has resulted in our graduates being highly sought after by employers.
- The Natural Hazard Management and German course from the University of Chester provides a structured framework within which you move towards increasing independence.
- Introductory modules and modules in distinct thematic areas introduce you to theoretical concepts, and assessments help you to apply these concepts in increasingly challenging ways. Subsequent modules will deepen your understanding and you will undertake independent projects with the scope to pursue your own interests in the subject area.
- You have an opportunity to undertake a placement at the end of Year 2 (Level 5). Depending on factors within your mode of study, you may also have the opportunity to complete an academic year in either Germany, Austria or Switzerland.Ê
- In your first year you will have the opportunity to study a further language from scratch.
Job prospects
A degree in German develops a range of highly desirable skills for employers including communication and presentation skills, the ability to work independently/with others, and analytical and critical thinking. Placements abroad enhance confidence and resilience. Graduates often pursue further study or careers in translation, teaching, business, hospitality or in international organisations.
