This one-year degree falls under the umbrella of the Data Science Academy (DSA), run by the School of Computer Science and Informatics, in partnership with the School of Mathematics. You will benefit from the shared knowledge and skills of both Schools. However, your degree will still be run by the School of Mathematics.

This Master's degree in Data Science is an industry-relevant and popular postgraduate programme of study. Data Science and "Big Data" are more important than ever. Graduates trained to garner insights from large data sets, extract patterns and provide actionable information to solve real-world problems are sought after in both the private and public sector.

This course will equip you with in-demand theoretical knowledge and practical skills to develop data science systems, use software to analyse and synthesise data, and manage all aspects of data science.

Big data is playing an increasingly important role in our society. The need for expert and ethically-informed data analysis is in high demand across many industries. This course gives you the professional and problem-solving skills for a range of high-level careers.

This interdisciplinary masters will be taught by the Schools of Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences. The academics conduct their own international-quality research. They use this to teach you the latest techniques and technologies in this field.

Develop your knowledge in key topics such as statistical modelling, machine learning and advanced algorithms. This course offers a range of flexible optional modules. This allows you to study a topic that interests you.

You will undertake an individual research project in an area of your choice. This can be with industry partners or with one of our expert research groups. Past projects have included:

Development of location-based service for education
UK precipitation forecasting
The effect of virtual audiences on music performance anxiet

Data science is rapidly emerging in organisations and the need for fully trained data scientists, analysts and programmers are in demand now more than ever. Businesses rely on big data to uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations to make informed decisions and drive business success. On the Data Science course, you will learn how to apply high-level analytical skills and knowledge to solve a range of real-world problems.

The MSc Data Science is designed to support your development of transferable skills and expertise to play a leading role at a technical and practical level in the industry. Additionally, you will work towards a globally recognised qualification, the SAS Joint Certificate in Applied Statistics and Data Mining. The Joint Certificate will validate your skills and ability to use SAS software, giving you a competitive advantage in the job market.
