At The University of Hull studying the BSc Psychology (Hons) you will study in the Department of Psychology which boasts state-of-the-art research laboratories and facilities for practical and project work, including: electroencephalography (EEG) for measuring activity in the brain, a Brain Stimulation Laboratory equipped with equipment for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an Eye Tracking Laboratory, a Sleep Laboratory, an Audiometric Laboratory, and much more. You will learn in a thriving, supportive environment and be taught by staff who are committed professional and research psychologists.

Psychology (Hons) degree courses from The University of Hull provide students with a range of skills that readily transfer to many areas of employment making our students highly employable. You will learn to: think critically, solve problems, communicate confidently and effectively, and work independently and in groups. The option of a foundation year for students who have either taken time away from education, need to enhance their language and writing skills or simply need to reinforce their academic skills for further study. You can take specialist modules in clinical psychology in your second year which make you eligible for the fast-track route onto the clinical doctorate programme thereby accessing a unique pathway into training to become a clinical psychologist.

Future prospects

When you graduate with a degree in Psychology you will have developed the skills and knowledge for a career in numerous areas. As a scientist, the analytical and problem-solving skills, along with experience in research, communication and information management skills will be valued by a range of employers.

You could go on to specialise as a psychologist working in one of the following areas:

  • Educational psychology Ð working with children and young people experiencing difficulties, helping with their educational and psychological development.
  • Occupational psychology Ð working with businesses to improve the performance and well-being of employees.
  • Health psychology Ð promoting healthy lifestyles and helping patients with ill health.
  • Counselling Ð helping clients resolve personal problems at difficult and stressful periods in their lives.
  • Neuropsychology Ð assisting with recovery from brain injuries and diseases.
  • Forensic or criminal Ð assisting with investigation of crimes, in prisons and with offenders.
  • Sports science Ð working with teams and individuals to help with performance and motivation.
  • Clinical psychology Ð working with clients to help them with conditions like depression, anxiety and other mental health problems.

Our Psychology graduates have also taken other career paths Ð broadcasting, social work, personnel management, teaching, the Civil Service, police work, and banking are other successful careers where a Psychology degree has opened doors.

There are opportunities to develop neuroscience skills through volunteering in the Department of PsychologyÕs Centre for Health and Clinical Neuroscience (CHCN), with clinical specialists from Hull and York, and the Hull York Medical School. The Centre has existing collaborations with Universities in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and New Zealand. CHCNÕs research areas include ageing and dementia.

Many students have stayed on for higher degrees at both Masters and PhD level.
