Course Curriculum

8

  • Difficulty level is moderate to difficult. The course is more focused on practical knowledge with a little bit of theoretical.
  • The MSc in Data Science at the University of Glasgow covers all the topics of data science with practical hands-on. The course is well-structured and well-planned by the university. Sometimes, a course becomes hectic because of assignment due dates and examinations.
  • On average, 3 classes, from 11 am to 4pm.
  • There are around 300 students in the course, divided into 3 batches of 100 each.
  • Approximately 60% of the students (~200 students) are Indian, 30% are Chinese and the rest are from other parts of the world.

Admission Experience

  • I have applied to 3 colleges:
    • University of Glasgow: Admitted
    • University of Bristol: Shortlisted
    • The University of Edinburgh: Rejected
    • King's College London: Rejected
    • I have received confirmed admission from University of Glasgow and University of Bristol.
    • Received rejection from 2 colleges - The University of Edinburgh and King's College London
    • Reason for rejection:
    • The University of Edinburgh: They were holding my application for long. Most of my peers got the rejection emails in the beginning itself but my application was on hold till June 2024. I was waitlisted but got rejected at the end as some better students got that opportunity ahead of me.
    • King's College London: They have rejected my application as according to them they hadn't received my documents from the professor and the manager. In the actual scenario, my manager has received an email to send the documents from the college and hence he sent them to them but my professor didn't receive any email. I spoke to the college internally but they ended up rejecting my profile. I was not much concerned about this, as the college fees were too high and I had a good scholarship from the University of Glasgow. So, back of my mind, I was not about to join King's College London anyway.
    • There were 2 big factors for choosing the University of Glasgow: I really liked their course structure for MSc in Data Science over the other university, like the University of Bristol had. The University of Bristol's course structure looks more like Advanced Analytics but not Data Science. Another reason to choose Glasgow was that I had an Indian leadership scholarship from the university.
  • Admission Process:
    • Filled the application from the university website in the month of November.
    • They responded to me back within 2 weeks with the conditional offer. And asked me to submit my UG university documents and IELTS score with the deposit amount to secure the place.
    • After document submission and deposit payment. My seat was reserved by mid-February 2024 and I got my unconditional offer letter.
    • Then I have applied for a Scholarship in the month of April and I got the response within 2 weeks on the acceptance of the Scholarship
    • Eligibility Criteria was only IELTS exam. Other exams were not required. For MSc in Data Science course: Minimum 6.5 Bands were required.
    • The overall admission experience was great and smooth with the University of Glasgow. They responded very quickly for each and every step. Only one concern I had was that they were not quick on responding if there was any doubt to clarify. But later on, they have provided us with a few Indian representatives to help us out with any clarification.
    • I applied for September 2024 intake. The factors influenced me: September intake has a higher job conversion rate and UK universities are the world's best universities.
    • Admission process took 4 months ( Nov 2023 to Feb 2024)
    • Admission Process:

Faculty

8

  • There are nearly 50 professors in our school for 300 students. So, it's a 50:300 faculty-to-student ratio that is 1:6.
  • Teaching methodology is totally on practical-based knowledge. All the given assignments are based on real-life problems to solve. This helps us to understand how industry works. Definitely, it helps to secure jobs.
  • I have not seen any faculty members assisting students finding part-time or full-time jobs. There is a separate career team who focuses on these things by conducting regular job fairs for both part-time and full-time.
  • Our director for data science. He is a fun-loving professor and he is always full of joy.

Campus Life

10

  • University has 3 Campus:

  • Mountaineering and Climbing Club
  • They conduct all the sports like Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Badminton, rugby etc on different levels. For cultural events they conduct Ceilidh dance (a Scottish dance form) on a regular basis.

Part Time Jobs

  • Almost 100-150 overall in a particular course secure Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions. ( This includes UG, PG and PHD students batch.)
  • I am not sure about this but this is somewhere around 14 pounds per hour.
  • Other jobs like library assistance, sweeper, university bookshop, cafe cashier. Usual hourly ranges from 12 to 14 hours per hour.
  • 20 hours maximum allowed per week.
  • It is quite difficult as the openings are fewer and students are more.
  • Indians mostly prefer to work at restaurants, grocery stores/any stores, coffee shops, and university jobs. 2. It's moderate to find a job but it is difficult for a student to manage academics and part-time at the same time. Also, it highly depends on the course. 3. Usual steps are attending the part-time fairs conducted by the university on a regular basis, online websites like Indeed, and the university career page.

Placement

6

  • Only 30 percent of the batch secures employment within 6 months of completing their course because some of them go back to their country. Some opt for the higher studies like a PG course or PHD and some move to other countries like Europe for the job.
  • Average salaries for graduates are from 30000 to 35000 per annum.
  • Jobs can be found in various ways:
  • Attend regular career fairs conducted by the university.
  • Connect with recruiters via career fairs, LinkedIn, and the company's website.
  • Follow the university career page for regular updates on emails about graduate opportunities.
  • Placement experiences here are totally different than in India. Here company asks to solve the problems before hiring. They provide some projects to solve; once done, the company moves forward with the application. The company also conducts logical reasoning tests, behavioural tests, technical rounds, and then HR rounds.
  • Major companies like PWC, Delloitte, and Accenture hire more graduate students from the college

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I have got accommodation off-campus (rented flat). I found this flat in the spare room. application.
  • Monthly rent was 500 pounds without any bills. It includes all the furnishings like beds, study tables, washing machines, freezers, and heaters.
  • Securing a flat is not an easy task, as I was looking for something near a university and at a cheaper rate. Challenges faced, like fewer properties available near the university with higher rent. No response from the landlord. Contract issues.
  • Future students should look for private student accommodations for better facilities and security.
  • It's only a 5-10 minute walk from the university. Most of the Indians stay 2 miles from the university.

Exams

  • Only IELTS is required to get admitted to the University of Glasgow. Other exams are not required. Minimum 6.5 Band was required for the course MSc Data Science.
  • Documents required: Statement of Purpose, LOR(s), CV, Previous College documents, Previous work experience documents (if any), IELTS score.
  • There was no interview conducted for the admission process at the University of Glasgow.

Fees

  • Overall tuition fee is £31860. I have not opted for hostel facilities, so hostel charges and other charges are not included.
  • Fees charged on a yearly basis. Those fees can be paid in 8 to 10 different instalments.
  • Rent: 500 pounds every month
  • Utility Bills: 40 pounds approximately every month
  • Groceries: 35 pounds approximately every month
  • Transportation: 0 pounds as I live 5 minutes walk to the University
  • Food and Clothes: 50 pounds approximately every month

Scholarship

  • I have received 2 scholarships. India Merit Award and International Leadership Scholarship from the University.
  • For India Merit Award: Minimum CGPA required: 8.0
  • For International Leadership Scholarship: Minimum CGPA required: 8.0 + Strong profile
  • Award Amount:
  • For India Merit Award: 5000 pounds
  • For International Leadership Scholarship: 10,000 pounds
  • A lot of them, whoever has an 8 and above CGPA, got the scholarship.
  • There is no average number who receives the scholarships every year. All of them, if they have an 8 and above CGPA, will automatically get the India Merit Award scholarship and for the International Leadership Scholarship, we need to apply explicitly. But the headcount is not revealed by the university.
  • Award Amount:
  • For India Merit Award: 5000 pounds
  • For International Leadership Scholarship: 10,000 pounds
