What Students Say
Likes
- In my opinion, the university being a russel group university helps a lot when looking for jobs so that was a plus for me.
- Then the curriculum of Data Science Course was very vast and well thought out.
- University of Glasgow has a very good reputation in the field of research which I experienced during my time here, as it showed in professor's teachings.
Dislikes
- Surviving in an abroad country is difficult and that too along with studies is difficult. This is something you have to manage on your own, there will be no support from the university in this regard.
- The teaching style is very different from India, as here nothing is taught in sense of teacher explaining things, you have doubts you can ask them but you have to explore things yourself.
- Teaching here is basically just reading out presentation slides, main focus should be on the doubt sessions where you will get your doubts cleared.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum is very challenging but at the same time rewarding.
- It was all concept based learning which is something I appreciate. The way of teaching could be improved.
Admission Experience
- I Applied in :-
- University of Glasgow - Admitted
- University of Edinburgh -Admitted
- University of Leeds - Admitted
- University of Bristol - Admitted
- Queen Mary University London - Admitted
- Fortunately, I was accepted in all the five colleges I applied to, but in my opinion what I felt after talking to my friends here is that the top ranked universities have a specific criteria for each and every branch of study, In my case, for data science, they needed some experience in this field or if you have done your bachelors in CSE, then preferably they might consider you.I
- I chose University of Glasgow because of their reputation in the field of Data Science and Information Retrieval. They are one of the top institutions in the world for studying Data Science. The admission process involves 4 steps: 1. Filling up the form on their website and submitting your SOP.
- If you get the offer, then you will be asked to fulfill some minimum eligibility criteria like IELTS score of 6.5 and above.
- Here you accept the offer and pay the security deposit to secure you seat(in my case it was 2000 pounds).
- Last step is to pay the tuition fees, either in installments or all at once.
- The admission process is very smooth as you have the portal access of the university where you can see all the updates regarding any steps pending or any payment pending.
- I applied for September Intake, started applying in November 2022 and got the acceptance result in Jan-Feb 2023. The admission process in general takes 3-4 months as it includes applying for the university, then getting the acceptance letter alongwith any eligibility criteria being unfulfilled like IELTS etc. Then after you get the acceptance, you need to pay the deposit amount under a month to secure your place. So, its a 3-4 month process in total.
Class Schedule
- There are at most 4 classes in a day and can be 5 days a week.
- Avg number of students in the class is around 40.
- In Glasgow, the number of Indians enrolled in my course was around 20-25.
Faculty
- I am not very sure about the faculty-to-student ratio, but the faculty present were knowledgeable enough to clear all our doubts.
- The teaching methodology is something which is completely different from what we see in India, it takes time to adapt but once you get used to it, you start liking the fact that its all about self learning. No support for jobs though.
Campus Life
- One campus, and it has all the amenities like library, sports building which includes separate basketball courts, badminton courts etc.
- Many hackathons and sports events take place throughout the year at the university.
- The extracurricular activities include sports week, welcome week where they have different cultural events throughout the day including dance and music.
Part Time Jobs
- Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), and Departmental Assistant (DA) Positions:
- The number of positions varies by department, but typically larger departments like Business School, Engineering, and Computing Science offer more positions.
- On average, about 15-20% of postgraduate students secure these roles, though this is an approximation.
- Pay rates generally range from £11 to £16 per hour, depending on the role and department. GTAs (Graduate Teaching Assistants) typically earn around £15-16 per hour.
- It is difficult to secure on campus part time jobs as student to job ratio is very less.
- Groceries mostly. The typical earning can vary from 11 pounds to 12 pounds per hour. The maximum hours allowed for students is 20 hours/week.
- It is challenging to get a part time job because of the inflation but still if you keep on applying in the right way, you can get a good job.
- To apply, you can go to indeed and start searching for jobs in supermarkets or any shop and then you go to their career page to fill the application form.
Placement
- More than 20 percent will get employment under 6 months after completing their course.
- Avg salary range that most students get is between 35000-45000 pounds per annum.
- After graduation, it has to be made sure that linkedin is updated with all the achievements and skills you have gained in this 1 year and you have to apply everyday for 10-15 jobs so that you can secure more interviews.
- There are multiple companies like, Amazon, Hastings Direct, Microsoft, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley etc
Accommodation
- I opted for off-campus as it was cheaper as compared to on-campus.
- I used google to look for different accommodations present and then chose one of them by considering the price and distance from the university.
- The monthly rent for my accommodation was 640 pounds. Its a tedious process to look for accommodation here as every accommodation fill very quickly.
- My recommendation would be to start early if you are sure which university you are going to join. Most indian students stay in on campus accommodations.
Exams
- IELTS is a must for UK universities.
- Documents needed for admission process are:
- Passport
- Aadhar Card
- Your previous marksheets from 10th standard.
- Statement of Purpose(SOP)
- Recommendation letter from your University in india, or from your employer.
- Experience Letters of any previous organisation you had worked for.
- Resume
- There was no interview for my application.
Fees
- Tuition Fees - 29300 GBP for 1 year
- Hostel Fees - GBP 160/week for 52 weeks (Private Student Accomodation)
- The fees is charged yearly or it can be paid in two installments.
- Monthly expenses - GBP 200/month including food, transportation and all the other regular expenses like going out once in a while or any stationary you need to buy(excluding rent as rent is mentioned above)
Scholarship
- There is Chevening Scholarship which is provided to 60000 people from all around the world to study in UK.
- Although I didn't receive it but one of my batchmates did, its a fully funded scholarship in which a student receives the entire tuition fees as a scholarship so that the student can afford studying in one of the top universities of the UK.
- Very few students receive scholarships but there's a university team which provides hardship funds if presented with evidence that you need financial support for your daily tasks.
