What Students Say
Likes
- Quality of education: The coursework is very detailed and is up to date to the current industry trends.
- Industry projects: The projects in the course work are linked with actual global companies like Volvo, Polestar, Powercell etc.
- Friendly Teachers : Almost all the teachers in the university are very friendly and encourage students to ask doubts and spark discussions
Dislikes
- The university does not have enough sports facilities. They only have a single indoor hall for pretty much everything.
- The cost of living in the Gothenburg city is relatively high when compared to other European cities. Monthly expense can go up to 10,000 SEK for student living in a 20 m2 apartment with attached bathroom and shared kitchen. Food in restaurants is also very expensive, most of the students actually cook everyday to keep expenses in control.
- Part Time jobs mostly need Swedish language. Students not knowing the language end up doing part time jobs of food delivery agents which is okay in summers but can be very challenging in the harsh Swedish winters.
Course Curriculum
- The courses are industry relevant and so need some home work to be done before coming to the class. Some courses can be chosen by use as electives, these can be easy to very difficult depending on the course the student selects. In general, 3 hours a day of daily study must be enough to pass exams.
- Positives of the course are that they are closely related to industry, some courses also take students for a industry visit to global companies. The teachers of the courses are high skills and are very enthusiastic about their subject which motivates the students.
- Negatives are not much, but as the courses are very detail oriented, it would have been nice if they had recordings of every lectures.
- Classes per day are not fixed, it depends on the courses you take. But at max 4 classes per day are held. But most of these classes are for higher durations like 1.5 hrs.
- Number of students also depend on the popularity of the courses. Some have high strengths up to 100 , some have as low as 4. My course had on an average 20 students.
- Indian students very in high number in most for my classes as my course was related to automobile industry which is one of the favourites for Indian students.
Admission Experience
- I applied to University of Stuttgart (Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS)) and was rejected because my courses didn't match their requirements. The only reason to apply for University of Stuttgart was the enormous automobile industry in the city and COMMAS was one of the few option options for Mechanical Engineers to apply for in English language. Chalmers University of Technology (Accepted). I didn't apply to many other universities as I had prior experience of how good Chalmers teachers are and also there were not many Universities offering Electromobility courses in English language. This made my filtration of universities very smooth.
- I choose Chalmers University of Technology because I did one of their courses related to control systems from edx platform. I really likes the way of teaching of the professor and the quality of the content. The University was providing very good quality , industry relevant courses on Electromobility, which matched with my interest.
- The admission procedure was also very smooth, they had videos on their websites to assist students in the application process. All the admission procedure is done on a website called university.in which is a portal to apply for course from universities in Sweden. Students have to upload their documents (IDs, transcripts, degree etc) on this particular website. Most of the courses in this university just need English tests like IELTS, score of 6.6 band and above for each section speaking, listening, reading and writing is enough. Other than that relevant courses in bachelors should be enough. Overall, the admission process is hustle free, and the institutions of Sweden involved in the process are helpful and transparent.
- I applied just after my Btech, as I was very clear that I had to do masters in electromobility and get industry experience from the European car brands. I applied in November 2021, and I got the result of selection by april 2022, later I applied for visa in 2nd of June, and by the mid July I got my visa. I reached Sweden on 29th August 2022 and the course started from 1st of September 2022.
Faculty
- I am not aware of the faculty to student ratio, however, as i mentioned before, the class strength is often very small, so the faculty very well knows each student. Teaching methodology is excellent, teachers are very friendly and are always ready to help. As, I mentioned before the teaching and the course content makes the student industry ready, however, the university has no responsibility to help student secure job.
- No, no faculty member are responsible for assisting the students for part time of full time jobs.
- I admire the most Professor Torbjorn Tringer, who spearheads the power electronics and battery research at Electric department of Chalmers, he is very experienced and is very passionate about electromobility.
Campus Life
- College has 2 campuses. that are far from each other but both in Gothenburg. On both the campuses we have library, research facilities, Johnnberg campus is for Automobile, Mechanical, Electrical and Physics. Lindholmn campus is for Computer science and Information Technology. Most of the clubs and pubs are in the Johnnberg campus, almost all departments have their own research labs, clubs and pubs for partying.
- Chalmers have a yearly rally throughout the city, where they make interesting vehicles , statues, bands, slogans etc. on major events that particular year.
Part Time Jobs
- Very less people secure TA , Research assistants roles as the professors generally prefer PhD students for such jobs. The pay range of a TA can be between 120-160 SEK /hr, mostly the max hours allowed per month is 200 hrs. There is no other job for students on campus other than TA or research assistant. As theses jobs are less, the competition is more and the professors want the best candidates to continue high quality teaching.
- Delivery agents can earns upto 130 SEK / hr. Waiters in Swedish restaurants earn upto 160 SEK/ hr and in Indian restaurants they earn 70-80 SEK/hr. The students can apply online or through connections with people already doing this kind of jobs. Again, For part time jobs, knowing Swedish is very crucial. Students planning to work as delivery agents must understand that the winters in Sweden are very harsh and the roads are very slippery due to snow.
Placement
- The placements of my batch were not good as the global market was hit and job markets all over the worlds were affected by it. Generally the placements for Chalmers are good. But again, as there is no assistance from the university, it is completely on the student of how they secure the job interviews.
- There are however some job fair hosted by the university, but they are just an opportunity to connect with people which usually is not very effective. Major companies that hire for my course are Volvo Group, Volvo cars, Scania etc.
Accommodation
- There is no accommodation on campus , however the university has some tie ups with large housing forms, they provide relatively affordable rooms. Monthly rent can be 4000 SEK for housing consisting of shared bathroom and kitchen, room having attached bathroom and shared kitchen can range from 5500 -7000 SEK.
- A studio apartment consisting attached bathroom and kitchen can be 6500-8000 SEK. The distance from the university differs property to property some student housings are near and some can be very far from university (20 mins by public transport).
Exams
- IELTS is enough for English requirements. Documents required for the admission process are CV , Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation (Preferred to have 2, one from university professor, one from internship), a summary document of all the relevant courses I did in my bachelors, a document from my bachelors university for grade conversion from CGPA to GPA, Internship certificates and identity documents like Passport.
Fees
- Semester wise: 70K SEK / semester. There are 2 semesters per year. Each semester has 2 sections of 3 months each. Monthly Expense for a student living in 20 m2 apartment having attached bathroom and shared kitchen will be around 10,000 SEK. Rent will be about 7000 SEK for 20 m2 apartment, mostly will be including the internet and water.
- It is advisable to take only student housing and not induvial landlord as the prices will and services will be on the higher side and students mostly face inconvenience in landlord housing. Food in restaurant is very costly, one time meal can cost as high as 120 SEK and beyond which makes around 6000SEK monthly on food. Student must try to prepare the food in his/her kitchen most of the time to save cost.
Scholarship
- In the application process, there will be a page dedicated to the scholarships available. These vary from course to course and also depends on what country the student is from. For example, Volvo provides 100 % scholarship for some students from India and China only, application for this can be done from the course application process itself.
- There is also some scholarships that provided 70 % tuition fee reduction , but again they vary from course to course, but will appear during the university application process.
