The SAT Math section gives you a built-in reference sheet with 11 formulas and 3 key geometry facts. This sheet appears on every Math module in the digital SAT. It covers area, volume, special right triangles, and basic circle and triangle rules.
The SAT Math formula sheet is available inside the Bluebook app throughout the entire section, and you don't need to memorise these formulas to access them. However, knowing them well saves time on test day. The SAT Math section has 44 questions across 2 modules, with a total time of 70 minutes.

What Is the SAT Math Reference Sheet?
The SAT Math section comes with a reference sheet, which is a list of common formulas you can use during the test.
According to the College Board, this sheet is available on all tests with math questions in the Bluebook app. You can open it by clicking "Reference" in the upper right corner of the screen during the Math section.
This sheet is the same for all students. It does not change based on difficulty level or module.
What are the Formulas on the SAT Math Reference Sheet?
Here is every formula and fact included in the official SAT reference sheet, as listed by the College Board:
Area Formulas:
- Circle: A = πr², C = 2πr
- Rectangle: A = lw
- Triangle: A = ½bh
Pythagorean Theorem:
- c² = a² + b²
Special Right Triangles:
- 30-60-90 triangle: sides are x, x√3, and 2x
- 45-45-90 triangle: sides are s, s, and s√2
Volume Formulas:
- Rectangular solid: V = lwh
- Right circular cylinder: V = πr²h
- Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³
- Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h
- Pyramid: V = (1/3)lwh
Key Geometry Facts:
- A circle has 360 degrees of arc.
- A circle has 2π radians of arc.
- The angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees.

What the Reference Sheet Does NOT Include
The SAT Math reference sheet only covers geometry basics. Many formulas tested on the SAT are NOT on the sheet.
According to the College Board, the Math section tests 4 content areas:
| Content Domain | % of Questions |
|---|---|
| Algebra | ~35% |
| Advanced Math | ~35% |
| Problem-Solving & Data Analysis | ~15% |
| Geometry & Trigonometry | ~15% |
The reference sheet only helps with Geometry and Trigonometry, which is just 15% of the paper. For the remaining 85% of questions, you need to know the formulas yourself.
Formulas not on the sheet that you MUST KNOW include:
- Slope formula and slope-intercept form.
- Quadratic formula.
- Exponential growth or decay.
- Mean, median, probability.
- Trigonometric ratios (sin, cos, tan).

How to Access the SAT Reference Sheet in the Bluebook App?
The SAT is now fully digital and taken on the Bluebook app by the College Board.
Here is how to use the reference sheet during the test:
- Click "Reference" in the upper right corner of any Math question screen.
- The sheet appears as a pop-up — it does not take up your question space.
- You can access it at any point during both Math modules.
The Bluebook app also gives you a built-in Desmos graphing calculator for the entire Math section. You can also bring your own approved calculator. (A calculator with “CAS” sign on it is NOT approved; the rest all are.)
Should Indian Students Memorise the SAT Reference Sheet?
Yes. Even though the sheet is provided, you should know these formulas by heart.
Here's why:
- Looking up formulas during the test wastes time.
- The SAT gives you about 1 minute 35 seconds per question.
- Geometry questions often need you to apply formulas quickly.
- Knowing the sheet well means you can focus on solving, not searching.
The College Board itself notes: "While this information is there if you need it, it's important to know these formulas and concepts before you take the test."

How Is the SAT Math Section Is Structured
Understanding the SAT Math section helps you plan how to use the reference sheet.
- Total questions: 44 (split across 2 modules of 22 each).
- Total time: 70 minutes (35 minutes per module).
- Question types: ~75% multiple-choice, ~25% student-produced response (fill-in).
- Calculator: Allowed throughout the entire Math section.
The SAT uses adaptive testing — your Module 2 difficulty depends on how you perform in Module 1.

The SAT Math reference sheet gives you 11 formulas and 3 geometry facts — all focused on area, volume, and triangles. It is available throughout the Math section in the Bluebook app. Since geometry is only ~15% of the Math section, Indian students must also prepare the remaining formulas independently. Use official College Board practice tests on Bluebook to get comfortable with the sheet before test day.
FAQs
Ques. Is the SAT Math reference sheet the same for the paper-based and digital SAT?
Ans. The formulas are the same. But for the digital SAT, the sheet is inside the Bluebook app. For paper-based accommodations, it appears printed at the start of the Math section.
Ques. Do Indian students taking the SAT internationally get the same reference sheet?
Ans. Yes. College Board provides the same reference sheet to all students globally. The digital SAT has been available internationally since Spring 2023.
Ques. Can I bring my own formula sheet to the SAT?
Ans. No. You cannot bring any personal notes or formula sheets. Only the official reference sheet inside Bluebook is allowed. Bringing unauthorised materials can lead to score cancellation.
Ques. Does the reference sheet help with Algebra and Advanced Math questions?
Ans. No. The reference sheet only covers geometry formulas. Algebra and Advanced Math — which together make up ~70% of the Math section — require you to know the formulas on your own.
Ques. Where can I practise using the reference sheet before test day?
Ans. College Board offers free full-length digital practice tests inside the Bluebook app. These tests include the same reference sheet and tools you'll see on test day. Khan Academy also offers free SAT Math practice linked to your College Board account.
