GRE ScoreSelect is a feature by ETS that lets you choose which GRE scores to send to universities. You can send scores from your most recent test, all tests taken in the last 5 years, or any specific test — depending on when you send them. On the GRE test day, 4 free score reports are included in your test fee. After the test day, each additional report costs INR 4,150. Scores stay valid for 5 years from your test date. Institutions only see the scores you choose to share; they won't know about other attempts.

What is GRE ScoreSelect?

GRE ScoreSelect is an official ETS feature. It gives you control over which GRE scores go to universities. You are not forced to send all your GRE attempts. You pick what to send, and institutions only see what you share. This is especially useful if you have taken the GRE more than once and want to send only your best performance.

Important: Some programs require you to report scores from all GRE attempts. Always check the score reporting policy of each university before applying.

GRE Score Scale: What Gets Reported

Before using the GRE ScoreSelect, it helps to know what your GRE score report contains.

Section Score Scale
Verbal Reasoning 130–170 (1-point increments)
Quantitative Reasoning 130–170 (1-point increments)
Analytical Writing 0–6 (half-point increments)
  • If you skip a section entirely, you get a No Score (NS) for that section.
  • Each score report also includes your percentile rank for each section.
  • Your official scores are available in your ETS account 8-10 days after your test date.
  • GRE unofficial scores for the Verbal and Quant sections will be displayed on your screen at the end of the test.

GRE ScoreSelect Options: On Test Day vs. After Test Day

The GRE ScoreSelect options available to you depend on when you choose to send your scores.

On Test Day (Free — up to 4 recipients)

After viewing your scores at your GRE test center, you can:

  • Send nothing: Choose not to send scores at that time.
  • Most Recent: Send scores from your current test only.
  • All: Send scores from all GRE General Test attempts in the last 5 years.

After Test Day (Paid — INR 4,150 per recipient)

When ordering Additional Score Reports, you get one more option:

  • Most Recent: Scores from your latest test.
  • All: Scores from all attempts in the last 5 years.
  • Any: Scores from one or more specific test attempts you choose.

Key difference: The "Any" option is only available after test day, not on test day itself.

What Institutions See (and Don't See)

This is one of the most important parts of ScoreSelect for Indian students applying to study abroad.

Institutions receive:

  • Your contact details (name, address, phone, email).
  • Date of birth and gender.
  • Your intended graduate major.
  • The GRE test dates and scores you chose to report.
  • Percentile ranks for each section.

Institutions do NOT receive:

  • Names of other universities you sent scores to.
  • Scores from attempts you did not choose to share.
  • Any indication that you took the GRE more than once.

This means your other attempts remain completely private — unless the university specifically asks you to report all scores.

How to Send Additional GRE Score Reports (ASRs)?

Here is what you need to know about ordering GRE score reports after test day.

Plan ahead if your scores are close to expiring; submit your ASR request well before the deadline to allow processing time.

How Long Are GRE Scores Valid?

GRE scores are reportable for 5 years from your test date. After that, they cannot be sent to any institution.

Your ETS account shows the exact date your scores expire. You can check this by logging into your ETS account and selecting your test date. Read more about GRE score validity

GRE ScoreSelect gives you control over which scores reach universities, with clear options for test day and after. The key decision point is timing: on test day, you get 4 free reports with limited options, while after test day, you pay INR 4,150 per report but gain the "Any" option. Always verify each university's score reporting policy before deciding what to send.

GRE ScoreSelect FAQs

Ques. Can I send scores from two different GRE attempts to the same university?

Ans. Yes. After test day, use the "Any" option while ordering an ASR. You can select scores from one or more specific test dates to send to a single institution.

Ques. Will universities know I used ScoreSelect to hide some of my scores?

Ans. No. The institution score report does not mention other attempts or that you withheld any scores. They only see what you chose to send.

Ques. What if a university requires all GRE scores to be reported?

Ans. Some programs have this policy. ETS recommends you check the score reporting requirements of each program before applying. If required, you must send all attempts.

Ques. Can I cancel my GRE score on test day before sending it?

Ans. Yes. On test day, you can choose not to send scores at all. You can also cancel your scores at the test centre. However, once you submit an ASR order after test day, it cannot be cancelled or refunded.

Ques. Is the INR 4,150 additional score report fee per university or per test attempt?

Ans. It is the per-score recipient (university). You pay INR 4,150 for each institution you want to send scores to, regardless of how many test attempts you include in that report.

Ques. Do Indian students need to send GRE scores directly from ETS, or can they self-report?

Ans. Many universities accept self-reported scores during the application stage, but they require an official score report sent directly from ETS before or after admission. Always check the specific university's policy.
