Computer-based tests give faster results in 1-5 days versus 13 days for a handwritten paper test. Computer-based tests are prioritized by the applicants more for their quick results delivery for tight deadlines.
Test questions and format are the same for both. The choice depends on your comfort with typing versus handwriting. Indian students should know that paper-based tests are ending soon.
The IELTS organizing body, IDP, will stop offering paper-based tests from mid June 2026. All the IELTS tests will be on a computer. However, a new option called Writing on Paper lets you type other sections but write by hand for Writing.

Key Change: IELTS Paper-Based Tests Ending
IELTS partners found that more test takers prefer computer-based tests over paper-based handwritten tests. They are more convenient with the advantage that IELTS results come faster than the paper-based test.
All IELTS tests will move to computer delivery. The exact timeline varies by country. Check with your local IELTS test centre for updates.
Note: If any applicant has already taken a paper-based test, their results remain valid for two years. The new rule will be applicable from mid 2026, expected around June-July.

Will the IELTS Test Questions be the Same?
The IELTS syllabus does not change between formats. Questions, format, and difficulty shall remain the same as they have been. Only the mode in which an applicant will answer the paper changes.
In the IELTS exam, if the applicant chooses the paper format, they write answers on a sheet with a pen. On a computer, an applicant types answers on the screen. The skills tested remain the same. Your score means the same thing regardless of format.

IELTS Results Timeline: Computer Is Faster
Computer-based IELTS tests give results much faster than paper-based tests. IELTS scores are valid for 2-years from the day of the test. This is important for Indian students with tight deadlines.
Results timing:
- Computer-based: 1-5 days
- Paper-based: 13 days
Note: If you need results quickly for university applications, computer-based is better. You get your score within a week instead of waiting two weeks.

IELTS Writing on Paper: A New Option
From mid-2026, you can type most sections of the IELTS test, but write by hand for the Writing section. This is called Writing on Paper. It combines the benefits of both formats.
How it works:
- Listening: Type on the computer
- Reading: Type on the computer
- Writing: Write by hand on paper
- Speaking: Face-to-face with examiner
This option helps students who write better by hand than by typing. Your handwritten answers are marked the same way as typed answers. Scores are comparable across formats.

Computer-based is better if the applicant:
- Type faster than writing.
- Prefer digital tools.
- Want results quickly.
- Need IELTS One Skill Retake option.
Paper-based or writing on paper is better if the applicant:
- Write faster than they type.
- Feel more confident in their handwriting.
- Have less digital experience.
- Prefer traditional pen and paper format.
IELTS One Skill Retake Availability
IELTS One Skill Retake is available for computer-based tests only. This lets you retake just one section instead of the whole IELTS test.
If you choose Writing on Paper, your IELTS One Skill Retake must also use Writing on Paper. Candidates cannot mix formats. The same delivery mode applies to their retake.
IELTS Score Validity and Recognition
Scores are valid and recognized the same way regardless of format. Universities and employers accept all formats equally.
Research shows scores are comparable between paper and computer formats. A candidate's score band means the same thing. Institutions cannot tell which format students use from their results.
All current paper-based results remain valid until the end of the recommended 2-year period. Applicants can use them for applications during this time.
