What Students Say
Likes
- Faculty: In terms of experience, approachablity, industry knowledge, all-round support and actual concern for students, the faculty here makes this place a family. Even those who don't teach you would be so, so supportive and helpful.
- Industrial Reputation: Birla Institute of Technology has a reputable and academically sound presence in the industry, along with a very visible presence abroad as well as in Indian industry.
- Community Support: A sprawling support network and communication between faculty, seniors, juniors, regular alumni meets, weekly guest lectures and seminars, etc. take place and students are actively encouraged to participate and contribute.
Dislikes
- Not a KJo style college: If you're looking for the raving college life as seen on social media, this place is too serious to give you that.
- Canteen: At the time of my enrollment, there was a rather big and functional canteen, but now the size as well as the area of functioning has dramatically decreased.
- Placements: For management department, despite quite a bit of progress, placements are still not up to the mark.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course curriculum in terms of industry relevance depends from subject to subject: Trade and Economics is relevant, Marketing is relevant, Digital Marketing is relevant but not up to date, Finance is relevant but needs overall structuring and update, HR is theory based. In terms of practice, there are levels to usage: in terms of academic and research usage, the content is comprehensive, but there is certainly a disconnect in terms of industry usage. Skill-building and Vocational training, Especially for technical subjects like Finance, in terms of Financial Analytics, Risk assessment and management, Stats, Digital Financial Reporting, etc. needs to be there. B.Com course achieves some of that, but in BBA it needs to be connected as well. Teaching methods from the faculty side are good, but they need to be updated in terms of student connect (Special Mention to our Director Vikas Tripathi Sir here, he taught us International Trade and Business in the last semester, and conducted various events like debates, pop-quizzes, discussions, role-play press meets, etc. all very well organised and, that succeeded in interesting even the most remote and disinterested students in class in the subject itself) Over the span of 4-5 months, Quizzes will be held in a week's window, mid-sems, and end sems, difficulty level is average, much of the pattern is similar to previous years.
Placement Experience
Placement situation for Computer Science Dept is average, while for Animation and Multimedia Dept. is above average as faculty members have experienced connections in the industry. For managment department, placement situation ranges from dismal to below average, especially for BBA. Yes, after MBA, the situation gets better. Internship opportunities are availed by students, that's a good situation in B. Com. In BBA as itself, placements cannot be guaranteed.
Fees and Financial Aid
In total, the fees for the whole three year BBA course I paid added up to roughly 5.8-6L, per semester being 95k-1L, which led to per year fees being almost 2L. During my time, development fees was included in that figure, and with the complete overhaul and renewal of the college campus that we saw during our time gave the value of money over time. Registration fees and caution money amount would be 20-22k, but everything else is included in the aforementioned figure. For the NSE affiliated B. Com (Financial Analytics Spl.) Course, the fees goes 4.5-4.8 L, MBA goes for 7.5-8L. Of course, with NEP integration and other amenities that have been started, fees might go up, but with the culture in the campus, it's a good investment.
Campus Life
Facilities are getting better, but overall, their condition and availability depends upon what department you're in. They're great for Animation and Multimedia, for Computer Science they're okay, and since BBA is mostly concerned with Classrooms and PPTs, that is good in terms of projectors, smart screens, auditorium access, etc. Library is good, all relevant books and journals are readily available, as well as with the option of online access. Clubs like Cultural Club, Sports, Social Media Club, and CSS-NSR, are amongst the most active, while Management and Finance Clubs are more into organisation of guest lectures and seminars. Fests, especially the three years I was there, were wholesome and fun, limited to students and their contribution. It would not be a raving party, but it's fun. I was part of the core organisation team more often than not, and with Charu ma'am's guidance, everyone worked at it with a lot of enthusiasm, and the stress of making the event seemed much deeper than the actual event. Spl. Thanks to ma'am for letting me be on the stage and on the mic, that helped me build my confidence and stage presence over these years. Sports meets occur annually, comprehensively cover athletics, indoor games, team games, outdoor games, screen gaming etc. and these occurred outside college campus during my time. There are student run Instagram channels for news and gossip, and students are working towards a more active online presence, college vlogs and podcasts are in the works.
Admission
Admission process is direct, easy and accessible. Windows open till late August, so people can enroll at their leisure. Fees payment is direct, corresponding department heads and teachers can be contacted for any information that is needed, and they help you throughout the enrollment process.
Faculty
Faculty to student ratio is average, especially in key areas like Finance, there should definitely be one or two more members, but for the rest, it's okay. However many there are, they are easy to connect with, not just in terms of academia but also great personal mentors and very, very helpful if you have a good equation with them. Even with faculty members you are not personally a fan of, they won't be hampering or negative to you, not much. Personally, I had really good equations with almost all the teachers in the my department- Management: Rachana ma'am, Meenakshi ma'am, and Preety ma'am. Monica ma'am, our Programme Co-ordinator was also really supportive and helpful throughout, as well as Arun Sir and Chanpreet ma'am. Charu ma'am despite being from the Computer Science Dept. Has been the best guide and support system for me, she's also the one to approach for student affairs and the events being organised in the campus. Preeti Sharma ma'am, Prachi ma'am, Amit sir, Randhir Sir, Manoj Sir, Pramila ma'am, Sanjay Sir, as well as our Director sir, personally, I had a wonderful time with each of them, even though not all of them taught any subject, they are all awesome. I've missed a few names, I'm sure, but they're all supportive and helpful to all students. The structure of exams is like so: Quiz-1 (10 Marks), Mid-Sems (25 Marks), Quiz-2 (10 Marks), End-Sems (50 Marks). Faculties usually don't pull back or fail any student unless they're hopeless. Course curriculum in some areas like International Trade, Marketing etc. are industry relevant, but can be even better. Subjects esp. like finance need to be overhauled and structured again, nobody needs to understand VAT Taxation system in this economy.
Night Life
Canteen used to be large and nice, now it's a work-in-progress. Library is good for peace and quiet, closes around 5 p.m. Public areas like the playground and entrance areas remain open for as long as the classes go on- most end at 6. There is no residential hostel facility, but faculties can help find suitable PGs nearby. Around the college, there is the Ashok Nagar locality, Mother dairy cafe etc. the locality is a bustling market so it's okay for girl's safety.
