Course Curriculum Overview
Communication design is broad and provides a great understanding of several different areas of design - definitely, the stream that is the least limiting to an individual. Faculties structure courses in a way that prepares you for both client work and future research work. Exams are few, most grading is done through assignments. Course curriculum could probably be revamped slightly to better align with advancements in design.
Internships Opportunities
Internship opportunities that I have seen so far for M.Des range from Boston Consulting, Oracle, Nutanix, Myntra, Flipkart, etc. and range of stipends goes from 105k/month to 20k/month. Internships are not restricted to streams and most projects involve real life design work that can range from graphic design to mobility design projects.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yearly fees are an average of .98L rupees including the hostel. Tuition fees have not increased recently, but hostel and mess fees often have hikes. Admission fees for M.Des including the hostel advance are 58k rupees. IITB provides both bank tie-ups (SBI) as well as merit/need-based scholarships across all programs.
Campus Life
IITB has great campus life. There is an amazingly equipped central library that is open 24/7 as well as IDC's own library that is open to students at all times. IDC has many labs such as metalworking, plastic, ceramics, bamboo, woodwork, painting, etc. There is a wide number of studios for drawing, AR/VR, design for the future, weaving, etc. IITB also has it's annual fest, mood indigo, which is Asia's biggest college cultural fest. IITB also has thriving club life with music, art, dance, fashion, culinary clubs. IDC itself has very vibrant culture with a number of its own clubs.
Hostel Facilities
Rooms (my room, hostel 15) are clean and decently sized. Mess food is served 4 times a day and is decent for the price, and they attempt to include a wide variety of cultures across India in the meals. Registration, room allotment, mess registration happens seamlessly during admission and I had no issues with it. Hostel fees are included with tuition fees when you pay per semester. Most students live on campus. Some of the older boys hostels are a bit small and definitely need revamping.
Admission
I applied to NID (DRE program) as well as to other IIts through CEED exam. I got into every college I applied to and decided to go to IITB IDC for communication. The campus infrastructure is great and the wide number of faculty are amazing pluses. IDC admissions for M.Des happen through CEED, followed by an interview and portfolio round for shortlisted applicants. The cutoff rate depends on your rank, usually ranks <100 have a fair chance of admission if their portfolio and speaking skills in the interview are good.
Faculty
Faculties are extremely friendly and approachable, and treat you like adults. Faculty to student ratio is 1:3, but there are always more faculties who may not have direct classes with you but are happy to help. Exams will depend from course to course but most grading is done based on juries and assignments.
Night Life
Hostels have no in timings, and neither does the main campus. The locality, Powai is pretty safe. The campus has a bunch of hangout spots like CCD and Chaayos that are open till 1am. There are also canteens open till 2am that deliver inside the campus. Otherwise, you can always blinkit and zepto as campus gates are open 24/7. The campus is huge and has innumerable hangout spots.
