Course Curriculum Overview
I chose M.Sc. (Geology) because I had found this subject of geology fascinating in my graduation. University has situated in the outskirts of town Bhuj in district Kutch, Gujarat. Kutch is a sedimentary basin from the quaternary time period therefore doing masters from here gives you an upper edge advantage as there is lot of field opportunities. The faculty: student ratio in our batch was 1:12. All the faculty is doctorate holding but maximum classes are taken by research scholars. The department has smart classrooms, geological museum, petrology labs, a Gis lab and all the facilities. Semester exams were held on time except the 4th semester exams which got late due to covid. The difficulty of the exams was moderate on the scale of easy to hard.
Internships Opportunities
The university or department does not provide such internship opportunities but one can apply for internships in various organizations related to geology such as ONGC, Atomic mineral directorate, coal India limited, Geological Survey of India, National institute of oceanography, NGRI Hyderabad, etc. with the recommendation of Head of the department. The internships provided in these organizations are stipend less. One needs to visit daily geological fields during the tenure of internships and required to present a detailed report regarding the field locations.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees are not so high. Even a person from the lower class can afford to study here. Also, the department provides a lot of scholarship opportunities for students coming from other states. There is no campus placement facility here. But students can apply for various internships with the recommendation of faculty.
Campus Life
There is no fest or tech fest conducted at the university. The department of earth and environmental science has a library for the students. Also, there is a big library at the university. I did not find many books on geology in the university library but the faculty helps you to get those. Classrooms are equipped with all the smart facilities like smart boards, projectors, and comfortable seats for the students to sit. Talking about sports, there are no such facilities for sports. University has a sports complex with just 2 badminton courts. Rather than this, there is not even a proper ground for students to forget about sports competitions. Regular competitions like photography and art are conducted at the university. There are no social groups, clubs, or any website run by the students in the university.
Hostel Facilities
Rooms are equipped with a bed, almirah, fan, table, chair, and lights. Freshers get the shared room while seniors get a single room in their final year. Bathrooms and toilets are very dirty and not being cleaned regularly. No facilities of light in corridors. The hostel is quipped with high-speed wifi but no proper wifi signal comes inside the room. Meal quality is average and the menu gets changed every day. Food mess charges are between 2000-2500 changes according to the number of students who eat. One can take the application form from the hostel warden. Just fill out and submit fees to the bank branch of the university. Hostels are affordable and priced around 7-8k yearly. For Sc and St students, hostel fees are just Rs 1000 for a year. One can opt for a room or Pg in vrindavan nagar in quite cheap prices.
Interview Experience
The personal interview was based on the subject geology itself. Questions were asked from the what you studied in graduation. One has to qualify the personal interview to get admission. A person can simply prepare for interview by revising the graduation course from geology subject.
