Remarks

I have only applied for a B.Sc in nutrition and dietetics at Vellalar College for Women. As this is aided, they expected only good marks with a biology major(some cs students were also there in my class) There are no minimum marks as it is based on the marks scored by other applicants. All the applicant's marks are ranked and the first 40 are given seats. There are no such procedures. It involves verification of certificate and payment.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

As I love biology, I decided to take botany or zoology. But my sister informed me about the nutrition course and then I changed my mind and took this. There will be each faculty for each paper in 1 st year and finally 1 faculty for 2 papers. There is a total of 4 staff in our dept and they have to manage 3 year students. There are both senior and junior staff with PhD and M.Sc qualifications and maximum to minimum experience but the teaching method varies with the staff. There are dedicated staff who prepare daily for the class and make the session interactive and vice versa. There were 2 CIA and 1 model and semester exam. It was easy and listening to the class is enough to pass.

Internships Opportunities

3

Due to covid, we have done only a virtual internship for 3 days conducted by Elite diet studio, Chennai. Actually, it was planned for 30 days but all cannot afford the amount. Then some of us attended this for 30 days as separate individual internships. There was no stipend, we had paid 3000 for it. New Product development was our project and is individually done by all. I have done an Instant herbal rasam mix. The documentation was also done in hurry to complete within a short span of time. Record, project, case study, internship and all these reports are to be submitted at a specific time and it's been difficult to complete.

Placement Experience

2.5

Due to the corona pandemic, all the cycle gets collapsed. I have attended placement training for 3 days during Feb (6th sem). We have been offered with only 2 insurance companies, 1 school and 1 coding company for placement due to lockdown. The highest package is 15000 and the lowest is 9000. I am not sure about it. In my class 9 out of 40 gets placed. I have chosen this course without knowing its scope. The dietitian is next to doctors and valued only with M.Sc. There are not much range of job opportunities. Other than hospitals, we can opt for the food industry or medical coding. Food industries also require any specialisation and pg degree with experience. Medical coding involves stress and not all can sustain it. It is the better course to chose, if u want to become a dietitian and can do pg also.

Fees and Financial Aid

As it is aided course, the fees structure is minimum and the tuition fee is around 3000 and other miscellaneous fees maybe 1000 to 2000 in addition with transport charge. I did not apply for the scholarship as I have not renewed my income certificate but my friends have got approximately 3000 scholarships.

Campus Life

4

There are many fests that individual dept will celebrate and the grand celebration of Pongal cannot be forgettable. It includes food stalls, crafts, games, exhibitions, silambam, salangai attam. Tamil dept conducts many international seminars and events. Each club will also be involved in conducting various programs. The library has a good number of readable but the accessibility is quite difficult for college bus students. There is no separate library hour, we can only access it at lunch or after evening class gets over. The classroom facilities include proper light and ventilation with a projector in final year classes and speakers in all classes with which important announcements, prayers are delivered. The lab facilities are also good and our food lab has all kitchen utilities. In addition to sports, there are also martial arts as an extracurricular activity. There is a gym that can be accessed in the evenings. I have enrolled in the YRC club. There are other clubs associated with each department.

The infrastructure of the college campus is very good and peaceful as well. My college has a vast library which works from 8.30 a.m to 5.30 p.m on all working days and study holidays. Here if a student wants to borrow any other books other than his/her course, they need to seek prior permission of the Principal to get them books.
