Remarks
Admission process: The Admissions for B.E. / B.Tech degree in Panimalar Institute of Technology can be availed in two ways that I know of (via Anna University Counselling or via Management Quota). Anna University Counselling - Admissions are carried out based on cut-off marks obtained in XII board exams and availability of seats as per preferred course/college. I had 192.25/200 cutoff marks and opted for Mechanical engineering in the said college, although much better alternatives were available. Management Quota (The information contained in this section is purely based on the data collected from my classmates based on their admissions in 2015, Current admission criteria may vary ) - Admissions are carried out on first come first served basis, Each candidate has to avail seats few months before their board exams and have to pre-book seats by paying a one-time fee (3 lakhs - 9 lakhs) as per course/demand, but the annual fee remains the same for all students.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course: Since I had more affinity towards physics and computer science during my high school, I had decided to do my bachelor's in either Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. (Pro tip: Choose engineering degree not only based on your personal interest but also the scope of the field / job opportunities). Curriculum: Course duration 4 years, Semeseter pattern(8 semesters), 6 subjects per semester(upto 7 semesters) + 3 subjects last semester - total: 45 subjects. Semester - 3, 4, 5, 6 mostly had practical papers while others had more theoretical papers in them. Faculty: Assitant Professors and Associate Professors were the main two category of teaching Staffs(Staff Qualification>Masters degree in their respective domains). As far as I can remeber Teaching standards are average. Exams: Internal Assessment conducted every month (three IA's per semester) and a University exam per semester. Internal Marks would be allowed based on Max( GPA obtained in the previous sem, IA's marks).
Placement Experience
From late Semester-6 or early Semester-7 students are eligible for placements. Students with no backlogs were preferred by most of the companies with a better package. Although decent companies like Zoho, Accenture, and some good core companies like Bonfiglioli Transmissions Pvt Ltd, etc visited, the companies with lower packages took in candidates with backlogs. Average Salary offered by most of the companies: 10000 - 12500 /per month, but there were few companies with good package did visit occasionally. Some students were forced into getting placed into low-paying jobs(for instance: a friend of mine with CGPA 8.3 had been forced to take a job as a machine operator for 10k). From my perspective, the placements were sub-par or below average. Percentage of Students without backlogs: Percentage of students placed = 10:6.
Fees and Financial Aid
Cost to Study: day-scholars: yr 1(1,15,000 + 25000Book and Accessories fees(But honest opinion not worth it.) yr 2[1,15,000] yr 3[1,15,000] yr 4[1,15,000] (would be spending only three months in college during sem-7, the entire sem-8 attendance is optional should be utilized for Project Work) Here - (Mandatory)1,15,000 = 75,000(Bus fees + Mess fees) + 40,000(tution fee). Since I had availed of scholorship[Refer AICTE - TFW Scheme], I had to pay only 75000 each year as the tuition fee was deducted from my college fee. hostlers(The information contained in this section is purely based on the data(hostel experience) collected from my collegemates): yr 1(1,15,000 + 25000 Book & accessory fees + 60000Hostel fees) yr 2[1,75,000] yr 3[1,75,000] yr 4[1,75,000] Optional.
Campus Life
Campus: Panimalar Engineering and Panimalar Institute of Technology has a combined yet separated campus infrastructure(From the entrance up to 800mts or so would be PEC and the rest would be PIT). For Freshers, there's a separate designated block on top of the Mechanical Engineering dept block constituting all freshers providing them an isolated environment. From Yr 2 each student is to attend classes from their respective departments based on their curriculum. Library: Technical Books + Magazines + Computers(without access to third-party sites or youtube). Amenities: None significant in the classroom, but had RO water cooler systems each & every floor, clean restrooms(cleanest I've ever seen), Mess(unlimited mealsBreakfast, Lunch), etc. Social groups / clubs: CAE, Aeronautics, etc. Apart from the occasional paid workshops, can't remember any significant club activities. No sports or extracurriculars until Yr-3.
