Remarks
The college is good to you if you perform well, know how to please the professors, act sincere and make some connections. Attendance is definitely considered while passing a student which they may not mention, but it is true management has to be improved but uptil now few complaints have been considered, toilets are being refurbished and students concerns are being taken into account.
Entrance Preview
Bharati vidyapeeth entrance examination. Can't remember score, opted for this college because it was closer to my home as compared to D Y Patil. Chose the course because I didn't get admission for MBBS and did not care to wait an extra year.
Course Curriculum Overview
The structure of the course is not perfect. First, second and third year are not term wise ie. Aside from 4 internal exams, only 1 final University exam at the end of the year. Only 3 official subjects per year to be passed. In 4th year, it is term wise, ie 2 final university exams in the year. 4-5 subjects per term. Instead of 3 subjects every year and then 10 subjects in final year, it should have been distributed adequately. There is no focus on research but in the third year we get an idea of the work because of clinical postings.
Internships Opportunities
Fifth year of our course is the internship. It is not compulsory and it is not paid. It is laughable to imagine my college paying interns for their work, it is not in the nature of my college. But at least they don't levy fees for interning here. In third and fourth year, all instruments, accessories like gloves, masks headcaps are paid for by students themselves, interns suffer the same. But now we have filed a complaint/request and now the college is seriously considering providing gloves and masks for free to interns along with a coffee machine.
Placement Experience
We do not have campus placements in this course. It is worth noting that many of our professors are alumni of this college. Safe to say that the faculty is rather clannish, many of the PGs end up working here itself. One of my friends who is an intern landed a job as a dentist in a government hospital in a rural town, earning 60,000/- per month with free stay. We consider her very lucky, as the demand for dentists has dropped a lot in recent years.
College Events
We have a cultural event each year which is organized by interns, never by college. So it used to cost upto 1000/- for entry ticket and food and other activities. Friendship week also used to be arranged by interns which thankfully was free. Technical and musical events used to be held by engineering college etc which were in our campus itself.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure keeps on increasing steadily and it is very expensive, but at par with other dental colleges. We are not provided a few things which other dental colleges provide free of cost to their students. Per Year 3.5 lakhs, Total of 14 lakhs per year. Fees for giving University exam is at least 5000/- if you fail, you have to pay 1.6 lakhs for the extra term (you only get one term back, not a whole year).
Fees and Financial Aid
There's no scholarship, it is a deemed university and hence there are many management seats. Loans are not available but they do excuse if a student is not able to pay the fees on time, but only upto the time of his or her University exam of that year.
Campus Life
The campus is nice and big with a lot of trees, vehicles arent allowed on the main campus road. Many affordable and good options for meals near the college. In our dental college female to male ratio is extremely high. About 20 males out of 100 students. There's a diversity in race, religion and economic status, people are generally good here regardless of that. Sports week is mostly for fun, nothing spectacular. Culturals were more well done with great performances by students.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities are not of a very good standard but this is the case with most colleges. Beds are alright, mattresses are not the best. One room is shared by two girls. There is a common area with a TV. There is security as well as CCTV cameras. Curfew is about 7 or 8 for girls hostel, not sure as I am a localite. Hostel seats are limited as per my knowledge. Mess food is below average as reported by my hostel friends.
Alumni/Alumna
Seniors are mostly very friendly and helpful. They understand our problems and they have helped me out on numerous occasions. They are also very competent and it scares us to think we may not ever be as good as they were.
Exam Structure
A typical day- 4 hours lecture, 1 hour break, 3 hours practical/posting. The practicals were exhausting. When practicals were off it was very chilled out exams were chilled out because internal exams used to be about 1 hour only and 4 times a year. University exams only once a year for the first 3 years which was good.
Admission
Admission process went smoothly enough, an orientation for students and teachers was given in a huge auditorium. They took the original copies of everybody's marksheets and other documents. Those who changed their minds or secured admissions elsewhere did NOT get their documents back. Their admissions were made final against their will.
Faculty
Almost the entire faculty is very well qualified, senior dentists and doctors are there as faculty. A significant portion of the faculty has superiority complex and have more interest in showing the students who is boss and how average students are scum while the extremely sincere ones are the only ones worth teaching. But the majority are surprisingly sweet, helpful and seem to care about students performance and studies.
