Which is better: Engineering Physics at IIT Bombay or Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee?
It would be suggested to pursue Engineering Physics at IIT Bombay rather than Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee.
When it comes to studying physics at IITB, there are some key differences between JEE physics and college-level physics. Here are some important points to keep in mind:
- In JEE physics, you study formula derivations after brief explanations of concepts and practice a lot of problems in that topic. College-level physics courses are typically more rigorous in theoretical and mathematical content, and problems are solved to help you understand the concepts more deeply.
- While EE does not have any pure physics courses after the first year, it focuses on making you an electrical engineer. Core courses include analog and digital electronics, signals and systems, network theory, electronic devices, microprocessors, power electronics, and some relevant math courses.
- EP, on the other hand, has core courses like quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, statistics, relativity, classical mechanics, waves and optics, nuclear physics, etc. There are also important math courses up to your second year.
- EP trains you in core physics concepts and prepares you for experimental physics and electronics, giving you many options for your career path. You can work in theoretical or experimental physics, electronics, statistics and stochastics, CS-related research, or pursue higher studies in physics.
- When choosing between IITB and IIT Roorkee, consider factors like the quality of professors, campus culture, and location. IITB has excellent professors, a beautiful campus, and great cultural and sports scenes, and is close to TIFR, which provides opportunities for collaboration.
- When it comes to placements, most EP students go for higher studies because they are passionate about physics. For EE, core and non-core jobs are similar to those for other courses in terms of job security and salary packages.
Finally, the "brand" of IITs, especially IIT Bombay, provides a sense of job security that can be reassuring for graduates.
Which is a better option: IIT Bombay mechanical vs IIT Kanpur electrical vs IIT Roorkee CS?
The general preference order is
- College wise - IIT Bombay > IIT Kanpur > IIT Roorkee
- Branch wise - CS > Mechanical ~ Electrical.
However, this is a popular trend, and you don't have to follow it. It is best to make a decision based on your individual preferences.
Doing something that interests you is considerably superior in the long run to doing something you dislike solely for money since, after a few years, money no longer motivates you.
Here are some information to make your decision easier:-
- The placement scenario for EE in IIT Kanpur is good and stands next to the CS department in the table.
- Though EE is the largest department when compared with others it still maintains its record well in placements.
- The NIRF Ranking of IIT Bombay is 3, IIT Kanpur is 4 and IIT Roorkee is 5.
- The Average placement at IIT Bombay Mechanical is 21.82 LPA with IIT Kanpur Electrical is 26.27 LPA and IIT Roorkee CSE is 22 LPA.
- More than 250 companies visited IIT Kanpur campus in 2023.
- EE offers specialisations like VLSI, SPCom, RF & Microwave, Power Engineering, Control & Automation. Placements for some of these specializations are 100 %, especially for VLSI, SPCom & RF.
Keeping aside the public’s opinion, my preference order is
IIT Kanpur Electrical > IIT Roorkee CS > IIT Bombay Mechanical
What should I take, metallurgy and material science at IIT Indore or electrical at IIT Bhilai?
I think the branch matters more than the institute and that being said personally I feel IIT Bhilai Electrical is a better option than IIT Indore Material Science. The small batch size enables you to make the most out of the opportunities and resources. The points below further prove my opinion

- The Electronics Club of IIT Bhilai Is well-equipped and enables you to experiment with various modules like GPS module, GPRS module, accelerometer, etc
Overall, taking IIT Bhilai will not disappoint you and you will have a plethora of opportunities here.
Should I pursue electrical engineering at IIT Jammu or geophysics at IIT Kharagpur?
I think I am qualified to answer this question as I graduated from IIT Kharagpur Geology and Geophysics department and I am working for ARM Group in the Middle East.
You should choose IIT Kharagpur due to following reasons:-
- Geophysics offers great opportunities to apply numerical, quantitative, and computational methods to geological investigations.
- IIT Kharagpur is ranked 6th in NIRF ranking while IIT Jammu is ranked 67th.
- IIT KGP focuses on holistic development and thus has a rich extracurricular culture that helps develop bonds between students of different branches.
- IIT Kharagpur has a median salary of 18 LPA, whereas IIT Jammu pays 17 LPA.
- IIT Kharagpur is one of the oldest IITs, established in 1951. It has better infrastructure and a larger campus area of 2100 acres.
What should I prefer IIT Guwahati civil, IIT Bhubaneswar Electrical, IIT Patna electrical and electronics, or IIT Kanpur material science?
All the mentioned institutions offer good academic opportunities for students. But in my opinion, Electrical from IIT Bhubaneswar is a better choice than IIT Guwahati Civil, IIT Patna Electrical and Electronics and IIT Kanpur Material Science.
- IIT Bhubaneswar offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in electrical engineering.
- The average course fee for the four years of BTech in EE from IIT Bhubaneswar is around INR 10 Lakhs.
- IIT Bhubaneswar is known for offering good placement for its students around 92.86% of students were placed in the placement drive.
- The highest package is INR 44.62 LPA, and the average package is INR 19.05 LPA.
BITS Pilani CSE or IIT Roorkee Electrical or IIT Kharagpur MnC or IIT Bombay Civil. What should I opt for?
I am a second year B.Tech Electrical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. The NIRF 2024 ranking of IIT Roorkee and other colleges is given below:
- IIT Bombay- 2
- IIT Kharagpur- 3
- IIT Roorkee- 6
- BITS Pilani- Not Available (2023 Ranking- 25)
Though all the options mentioned by you are equally good, I am mentioning below the highlights of B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee-
- The Electrical Engineering department of IIT Roorkee offers excellent placements. Top core, finance, and consulting companies visit the department for recruitments.
During 2023, IIT Roorkee recorded the highest package of INR 1.3 CPA, and the highest international package of INR 1.06 CPA. Total 63 recruiters visited the campus with 500 job offers. Some of the top recruiters for the placement season were- BCG, Bajaj Auto, Flipkart, and Tata Steel.
During 2024, Flipkart offered a package of INR 34 LPA, and the position of Software Developer. This offer was open to B.Tech CSE, Electrical and ECE students.
Myntra offered a INR 30 LPA package for the role of Software Development Engineer, and this offer was open to students of B.Tech (CSE, ECE, EE) & MSM. These are just two examples.
- Apart from placements, IIT Roorkee offers top class research facilities to its students.
- With the rise of technologies like IoT, AI, and renewable energy, electrical engineers are in high demand in the current market.
The choice would ultimately depend upon your goals and interests, but I can assure you that B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee will provide you with great academics, research opportunities, and placements.
Which is better, CSE at IIT Dharwad or electrical in IIT Bhubaneswar?
Electrical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar is a great choice, and I can vouch for that, as I have studied there. I don’t have much idea about CSE at IIT Dharwad.
- IIT Bhubaneswar is a well-recognized academic institution in India with an excellent curriculum and student research facilities.
- The institution provides BTech and MTech programs.
- The course fee for first-year BTech is INR 2.32 Lakhs, and 92.86% of students will be placed in 2023.
- IIT Bhubaneswar holds an excellent placement track record.
- The highest package is INR 44.62 LPA, and the average package is INR 19.05 LPA.
Which is better, MNIT for CSE or IIT Mandi for electrical?
Although both programs are offered by prestigious institutes, I prefer CSE at MNIT to electrical at IIT Mandi. Considering only the branches it’s not a brainer that CSE offers much better placement opportunities than Electrical. I am not saying IIT Mandi placements are not good, it's just that they cannot be compared to MNNIT CSE placements.
I would suggest that you go for CSE at MNNIT rather than Electrical at IIT Mandi. Yes, you will miss the much coveted IIT tag but trading it with an NIT tag, better college life, and excellent placement opportunities is not a bad deal right? The moment you sit for placements and start receiving excellent packages in contrast to your counterpart electricals, you will realize how wise your decision to choose CSE was.
I'm currently pursuing my B.Tech in electrical engineering (2nd year) from MNNIT, Allahabad. What options are open for me after completing my B.Tech?
As an engineering student, after your final year, you will have a lot of options to explore once your degree is complete. It is definitely not that easy but here are a few options to look at:
Private job from College:
- For this, you will need to get a good CGPA and a job in a core electrical company.
- You can think of getting jobs in companies like Consulting, IT or Software companies.
GATE and GRE:
- If you are looking for jobs in the private sector, you can aim to appear for GATE as this will help you secure a really good job in the private sector.
- For this, you need to have good knowledge about your subjects and information regarding the public sector as many PSUs are looking to hire via GATE scores.
- You also have the option of doing an M.Tech from an IIT.
- Lastly, if you are thinking of going abroad, prepare for the GRE and aim for a great score.
MBA:
- If you are not interested in pursuing your current field, try looking for a placement in a consulting or IT firm.
- You can secure an experience of 1 to 2 years and enroll in an MBA course to boost your career.
Entrepreneurship: Another great option to try if you are looking to start a business.
These are mainly some of the top few options you have. You can think about each of them carefully and then decide if you would like to remain in your field or switch over.
Which is better, IIT Bhubaneswar for ECE or IIT BHU for electrical?
Both IIT Bhubaneswar for ECE and IIT BHU for Electrical are good options for students to pursue. Being a student of IIT Bhubaneswar I can vouch for the institution as it is known for offering exceptional academic courses and research facilities.
- The ECE department of IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its highly qualified faculty members.
- The department offers both Btech and MTech full-time courses for the students.
