M.Tech Mechanical is a preferred stream but its success is directly proportional to the level of placements offered by colleges in comparison to the fees or investment made. The number of students enrolled is less compared to B.Tech making it a less lucrative option for campus placements.

The prime-most details to be focused upon are the average and highest placement scenario of both the colleges in general.

• 79% placements in NIT Surathkal M.Tech as opposed to 50% in ISM.

• Major Recruiters are Teradata, Cisco, Dell EMC, Riverbed Technology, and Huawei Technologies.

• ISM M.Tech is not preferable for mechanical, it’s a sure shot option in case of CSE or Mineral engineering.

• The only reason to prefer ISM is the IIT factor attached to it which makes it more appealing in terms of faculty and culture.

The packages offered in the Mechanical stream in NIT Surathkal are quite good as compared to those in ISM Dhanbad. The Mechanical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad is top-notch with state of art laboratories and a history of impact research under collaboration with industry.

Before 2017, the MTech Mechanical department saw only 40%-50% placements with PPOs which were places of internships for students as well; as part of the MTech project. MTech Mechanical in CAD CAM saw 10-15 placements in 2017; most of the students did get internships with Siemens, Fiat Chrysler, and Cummins.

The department has good labs, over 27 faculty members, and 85 seats with a distribution of 18-25 each for the 4 MTech specializations.

• The computer science department at VJTI had a higher placement rate in comparison to the Mechanical Department.
• In 2019; Ambuja Cement, Bank of America, Barclays were major recruiters with an average package of INR 6 LPA.
• In 2019, the average on and off Campus placement rate for MTech students, in general, was 62.23 %; with an average package of INR 5.30 LPA.

The latest data of 2020 placements has not been made available yet. There has been a 20% improvement in the placement rate of MTech students from 2017 into 2019. The BTech level still has a much higher placement rate of about 85%-97%. Students are free to decide through the placement data shared above.

Welding technology has the distinct advantage of having some organizations who come to NIT Trichy solely to hire welding masters. In core welding firms, more than 50% placement is guaranteed. During the placement process, many software and mechanical firms visit the campus. 

• According to the recent placement highlights, the placement average for Welding Technology was around 60%. The placement average is less this year due to the ongoing pandemic. 
• The average CTC offered in the placement is 7-9 LPA. 
• The major recruiting companies that visit the campus are Tata Steel, Caterpillar, Lincoln, etc. NDT companies also recruit from Welding. If you have the required skills you can also sit for software and data science roles. 
• Almost 60% of the branch get placed in Mechanical core while the remaining 40% get placed in sectors like software, marketing, etc.

If you have good CGPA and decent communication skills then getting into core sectors from Welding Engineering at NIT Trichy will not be that difficult.
