I'd give it 4 stars. The Software Engineering program is pretty solid. Plus, being close to Silicon Valley means there are tons of job opportunities once you finish at SJSU.

As someone who used to work as a college counselor, I've seen over a hundred students head to the University of San Francisco, and feedback was always positive. About a decade into my teaching career, I went there for my master's and often bumped into my former students on campus. They seemed to really enjoy both their studies and social life. The university is small enough for everyone to feel connected, but its city location gives it lively energy that many campuses lack.

It's a cozy place, offering a good mix of campus activities while being situated in a quiet yet central part of the city, making it easy for students to explore. The facilities are great, and the teaching quality is top-notch. The student body is quite diverse, attracting people from all over the globe. Their Nursing program stands out due to its partnership with the highly-rated UCSF hospital, and many graduates find jobs at UCSF or Stanford Hospital right after college. The business department also has a strong reputation, with great links to local businesses.

On the flip side, like most private schools, it's pricey, and sometimes the financial aid isn't consistent. San Francisco itself isn't cheap either, especially if you're dining off campus. There's no football team, so if you're looking for that traditional college vibe, you might miss it. But they do have an exciting basketball program and solid teams in baseball, volleyball, and soccer. Plus, you've got the Giants, 49ers, and Warriors nearby. It might not have the prestige of some other Jesuit schools, but it's definitely more laid-back and a fantastic place to study.

I would lean towards choosing SJSU for these perks:

  • It's located right in Silicon Valley.
  • It's close to other universities, situated in San Jose.
  • California offers a safe living environment.
  • The job placements here are fairly good.
  • Established in 1857, which means it has a lot of experience across various fields.
  • There are different choices for on-campus living, like student apartments and suites.
  • The student-to-faculty ratio is 29:1.

Plus, it might be a popular choice for Indian students.
