Hey there,

I was at SVCE from 2018 to 2022. The college seems to focus a lot on getting money from students. They often come up with different excuses to charge us. The food in the canteen is pretty bad, even worse than what you might expect in jail, and it's not safe to eat either (sometimes there are bugs in it). There's a noticeable presence of Brahmanism, as most of the professors are Brahmins.

On the bright side, the college has a good placement record. Many companies come here to hire students. However, if you have the necessary skills, going for off-campus jobs might be a better choice. For on-campus placements, they charge 40k rupees claiming it's for training, but honestly, even 4k would be too much for what they offer.

All in all, if you're looking to spend your money unwisely, SVCE could be right up your alley.

Score:
0/10

Here's a detailed review of my time at Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Sriperumbudur. It's a bit lengthy, so thanks for sticking around.

I just wrapped up my first year at SVCE, and I’m pretty content with the facilities and infrastructure there. The college is about 35 KM away from Chennai, and the daily college bus service makes commuting easy.

Campus Life:
The campus spans 95 acres, covered in greenery which makes it very pleasant. I've heard from seniors that it was even more beautiful before the 2015 Chennai floods. Each department has its own building with spacious classrooms, all equipped with projectors.

Dress Code:
Unlike many AU colleges, SVCE is quite relaxed about dress codes. Jeans are fine, as long as the clothing is not inappropriate or revealing.

Faculty:
Most departments have professors with Ph.D.s who are engaged in advanced research. The Mathematics and Humanities departments stand out for having highly knowledgeable and motivated faculty.

Student Dynamics:
You can join SVCE through merit or by paying through the management quota. Merit students are generally hardworking and maintain good GPAs, though often lack in communication and aptitude skills, which affects placements. Students entering through management quota tend to be street-smart and actively participate in college clubs. Of course, there are always exceptions.

Hostel Experience:
I commute daily, so I don’t know much about hostel life. Friends have mentioned that the mess food is not great, and sometimes the water quality is poor. Despite this, hostel students enjoy a lot of freedom and have fun exploring their interests.

Extracurriculars:
This depends on the department, but students are encouraged to attend symposiums and pursue their interests, receiving attendance allowances for these events.

Placements:
SVCE is well-regarded for its placements. If you’re in a circuit branch like CSE, IT, ECE, or EEE and have good skills with basic communication and aptitude, you can expect a package between 8 to 12 LPA. Otherwise, mass recruiters are an option. Core branches also have a fair number of visiting companies. The placement cell is dedicated and starts training students from the first year.

Alumni Network:
The alumni network is vast with entrepreneurs, IAS officers, and professors worldwide. Many grads pursue M.S or M.B.A abroad. SVCE alumni are found in universities across the US and Australia. I’ve talked to seniors who got into Georgia Tech, Purdue, and Arizona State University.

In summary:

Pros:

  • Strong alumni network
  • Decent placements
  • Flexible attendance
  • Friendly and competitive peers
  • Serene campus
  • Good exposure and freedom

Cons:

  • Expensive and not-so-great transport service; same fare for different distances
  • Recent tensions between management and faculty
  • Decrease in experienced faculty as some leave for better salaries at places like SSN and VIT

Hey there,

I've come across numerous discussions regarding SVCE's standards and quality, and since I graduated from there, I can shed some light on this.

If your goal is to ace exams and top the charts at Anna University, SVCE might not be your ideal choice. You might end up frustrated with the teachers over internal marks.

When you first join SVCE, you'll meet all sorts of people. Some students aren't too worried about grades, and others come from diverse cultural backgrounds, even from different states. You'll have quite a bit of free time since SVCE doesn't pile on long assignments or frequent tests. You can use this time to engage in meaningful activities like working on mini-projects or publishing papers in international journals.

I've seen students working on some really innovative projects and even starting their own ventures. It's quite inspiring to watch them dive into things that other college students might overlook. The atmosphere here isn't nerdy at all. Most folks are laid-back but have solid plans for their future.

As for the college management, there have been three principals in my four years there, which has led to some changes. They're trying new teaching methods, whose benefits might be seen in the long run. Now, every classroom is equipped with projectors and speakers. Teachers are instructed to conduct 70% of classes using these tools and the remaining 30% with traditional methods like chalk and board. The idea is to enhance eye contact and keep students focused. However, speaking from experience, many of us mastered the art of sleeping with our eyes open during these sessions.

Despite that, this teaching method proved helpful during exams. Teachers share their presentations and notes, which align perfectly with Anna University's answer keys. Studying those notes was enough to secure good grades for me.

The labs are well-equipped and maintained, which is a plus. The senior staff is quite talented, and some can teach complex subjects spontaneously. I passed a tough subject by relying solely on my HOD's notes without even buying a textbook.

Of course, every department has a few eccentric folks, but that's common everywhere. Some management rules can be annoying, like closing the OAT during class hours, canteen timings, or the parking system. But students here, including the girls, are known for their resilience.

Regarding placements, SVCE stands out in Tamil Nadu, attracting companies in various domains like product-based, data-based, and hardware-based. Even if some companies don't return every year, it's not SVCE's fault. The placement department, led by Mr. Muralitharan, is quite effective. He ensures that almost every student who seeks campus placements leaves with an offer letter. Whether you're a 7-pointer or a 9-pointer, what matters is your knowledge, not just grades.

For those interested in higher studies, SVCE is a great choice. Recommendation letters from top professors are highly valued, though they're only given to deserving students.

Lastly, SVCE boasts a strong alumni network, both in India and abroad, that stays connected.

I've probably gone on long enough. Remember, no college will meet all your expectations, but you'll learn to adapt.
